Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Norwich, CT - The Aberdeen IronBirds and Connecticut Tigers played another tight game, but the host Tigers scored the game winning run on a wild pitch in the 8th inning to secure a 4-3 win.
The IronBirds jumped on the Tigers in the first inning. Federico Castagnini started a hit parade and he was followed by Alex Murphy and Riley Palmer, all three hitting singles. With the bases loaded and one out, Jamill Moquete hit a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Castagnini and give the IronBirds a 1-0 lead. Alex Murphy was picked off of second base to end the inning, however, and he would have to leave the game due to injury.
Things got interesting in the bottom of the first. IronBirds' Manager Matt Merullo moved Tanner Murphy from Designated Hitter to Catcher, meaning that the pitcher would have to bat for himself, third in the order in tonight's IronBirds' lineup.
LHP John Means got the start for the IronBirds and allowed a run on two hits in the bottom of the first, as the Tigers tied the game at one.
Connecticut jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third on the strength of two doubles, one each from Derek Hill and Michael Gerber.
Pitcher John Means led off the top of the fourth inning, becoming the first pitcher starting a game to bat in the same game. He struck out looking, but did foul off a couple pitches in the at-bat.
The IronBirds took the lead again in the sixth, again with help from Moquete. With Wilkerson and Castagnini on base, Austin Anderson, batting in the pitcher's spot, hit a single to load the bases. Moquete then mashed a two run single to left field, scoring Wilkerson and Castagnini. It gave Aberdeen a 3-2 lead.
The lead did not last long. The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning. Joey Pankake greeted reliever Matt Trowbridge by reaching on an error. Three batters later, he scored on a Kasey Coffman single to left, tying the game at three.
In the eighth inning, the Tigers scored a run on a wild pitch to take a 4-3 lead.
Aberdeen loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, but was unable to push the tying run across the plate.
Ivan Hernandez took the loss for the IronBirds.
Aberdeen will send LHP Stephen Tarpley to the hill tomorrow in the middle game of the series. First pitch from Dodd Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.
