Game Notes at Las Vegas

July 2, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Tonight's Game: After dropping the last two games, the Aces will look to rebound with Braden Shipley taking the ball for manager Chris Cron. Shipley enters the contest with a 2-3 record and a 7.46 ERA but has pitched very well over his last four starts. Over his last four, he is sporting 1-1 record with a 3.33 ERA to go with 21 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. He's recorded three quality starts over his last four appearances. The Aviators will send top prospect Jesus Luzardo to the mound. Luzardo has yet to pitch for the Oakland this season as he works his way back from a shoulder strain, but has made four rehab appearances for High-A Stockton and Triple-A Las Vegas compiling a 2-0 record with a 2.93 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched. Luzardo is the No. 1 prospect in A's system, the No. 2 left-handed pitching prospect, and the No. 15 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Three is a Party: With Wyatt Mathisen's seventh inning home run last night, Reno now has three sluggers with at least 20 home runs on the season (Kevin Cron, 27, Yasmany Tomas, 22, Mathisen, 20). The Aces are the only team in the Pacific Coast League to have three separate players with at least 20 homers each. The OKC Dodgers have two players with 20 homers, and so does Round Rock. The Columbus Clippers of the International League is the only other team in Triple-A that has three players that all have at least 20 home runs. (Bobby Bradley, 24, Eric Haase, 20, Trayce Thompson, 20)

Longball Leyba: With Domingo Leyba's two home runs in last night's ballgame, he has now homered the last three games, something he has never done before. Prior to Monday's game, he's homered on back-to-back nights just three times in his career professional career (July 24-25, 2013, Dominican Summer League Tigers, July 13-14, 2018, Jackson Generals and May 29 -30, 2019 for the Aces). He also has homered five times in the last three games, something else Leyba has never done before.

Good Things Must Come to an End: Travis Snider's 28-game on base streak ended yesterday after going 0-for-4. His streak started way back on May 25th against these same Aviators. Over that time, he went 36-for-98 (.367) with two home runs, 10 RBIs, 17 runs scored, 24 walks all while holding a .492 on-base percentage.

Records on the Horizon: The Aces have a few franchise records on the verge of being broken. With a win tonight, Braden Shipley will tie Charles Brewer ('12-'14) for the franchise record in wins with 24. Kevin Cron is five home runs away from tying Christian Walker's single-season home run record set in 2017 of 32. He is just six home runs away from tying Brandon Allen and Mike Jacobs for the all-time lead in home runs with 55. Though already owning the franchise record for saves, Jimmie Sherfy needs just one more save to reach 60 in an Aces uniform.

That Many Home Runs Already?: With five home runs in last night's game, the Aces now have 150 home runs on the season. They did not have 150 home runs in 2018 until August 26th and had 156 longballs the entire season.
