From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: J.T. Brubaker tossed seven innings of one-run ball to carry the Tribe to a 3-1 win over Rochester on Wednesday night. Brubaker's seven-inning start was his longest in a Tribe uniform. He allowed just four hits, his lone mistake coming in the fourth when Willians Astudillo took him deep with one away to even the score at 1-1. Tanner Anderson pitched the final two innings to earn his fourth save in six opportunities. Kevin Newman, Austin Meadows and Jason Martin each had two hits apiece, and Newman swiped second base twice to retake the lead in the IL for most stolen bases with 24. Meadows scored the decisive run in the fifth thanks to a throwing error by second baseman Gregorio Petit on a slow infield single hit by Jose Osuna. The win moved Indy back into first place in the International League West Division.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Indians enter tonight's game alone in first place in the IL West Division for just a second time this season. The Tribe also held first place for a day after their win on July 14 vs. Toledo. Indy has also been tied for the division lead just twice this year, doing so after wins on April 7 and April 8. Indianapolis is seeking to win its fifth division title in the last seven years.
WINNING WITHOUT AN XBH: The Indians sprayed nine singles last nine and used small ball in the process, dropping down two sacrifice bunts, stealing three bases and also recording a sacrifice fly in a rare win without an extra-base hit. The game was Indy's seventh of the season without an extra-base hit; they were 0-6 in the previous six, including four shutout losses. The Tribe's last victory without an extra-base hit was May 11, 2016 at Syracuse, where they defeated the Chiefs 3-1 on nine singles. The Tribe had lost 24 straight games where they failed to record an XBH. They lost their final seven games without an XBH in 2016, went 0-11 without an XBH in 2017 and dropped their first six without an XBH this year.
THREE RUNS OR LESS: Last night's victory improved Indy's record when scoring three runs or less to 7-34 on the season. They had lost 12 straight games when scoring three or less, with their last win coming on June 13 vs. Toledo (W, 3-2). The Tribe went 13-42 when scoring three or fewer runs in 2017.
OFF AND RUNNING: Kevin Newman stole two bases last night, giving him a league-leading 24 swipes in 33 attempts this year. The speedster has three of the four individual multi-SB games by a Tribe player this season. His first two occurred on June 1 vs. Scranton/W-B and June 25 at Toledo. Austin Meadows has the other two-stolen base game by a Tribe player this year, doing so on May 1 at Toledo. The Indians are 14-7 when Newman successfully steals a base this season. Surprisingly, Indy is 6-2 in games where Newman is caught stealing, as well. Indy won its only game where Newman both stole a base and was caught stealing (July 4 vs. Louisville), meaning they are 19-9 when he attempts to steal a bag.
MULTI-HIT MAGIC: Newman, Meadows and Jason Martin all had two hits in last night's victory. The Indians are now 3-4 when Martin records two-plus hits, 9-3 when Meadows has two or more knocks and 20-9 when Newman records a multi-hit performance.
BRUBAKER BRILLIANT: J.T. Brubaker was outstanding for the Tribe last night, striking out four and allowing just four hits in 7.0 innings pitched. It was his first start of 7.0 innings with Indy and his third overall this season, the other two coming in back-to-back starts with Altoona on April 23 and April 30. The Curve won each of those games. The 24-year-old is 8-5 with a 3.15 ERA (40 ER/114.1 IP) in 21 starts between Double-A (six starts) and Triple-A (15 starts) this season.
