Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers rebounded after last night's loss with late offense to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-1, tonight at McCoy Stadium.
Despite strong starts from both sides, the Columbus offense came alive for two runs in the eighth inning, which proved to be the difference.
Yu Chang helped the Clippers to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, roping a single to left off Pawtucket starter Josh Smith.
The Paw Sox answered right back in the home half of the fourth when Sam Travis singled in Adam Lind on a grounder into right, tying the game at 1-1.
Both Smith and Clippers' starter Mitch Talbot locked things down after that, with Smith lasting five frames and Talbot pitching into the sixth.
Talbot gave the Clippers all they could ask, surrendering just one run on six hits in five and two-thirds innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
The teams remained square at 1-1 until the eighth inning when the Clippers a man on with one out for Yandy Diaz. He scorched a double off reliever Fernando Rodriguez to provide his team a 2-1 advantage.
Eric Haase kept things going in the eighth with a hard groundball to third that went through the legs of Ivan De Jesus Jr. Diaz chugged around from second to give the Clippers a 3-1 lead.
Jon Edwards shut out Pawtucket in the eighth and ninth innings for the series-evening save.
The teams will conclude their series at McCoy Stadium with the rubber-match tomorrow at 11:05 a.m.
