Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Clay Holmes hurled seven shutout frames, Ryan Lavarnway hit his sixth home run and the Indians sealed a series victory over Rochester with a 4-0 shutout on Thursday night. Indy won the final two games of the series, and its starters posted a combined 0.90 ERA across 20.0 innings in the three-game set.
The Indians' (54-47) league-leading 12th shutout was led by Holmes who continued his dominance over the last two months. His power-sinking fastball resulted in 12 ground-ball outs. He punctuated his outing with back-to-back swinging strikeouts by Andy Wilkins and Jon Kemmer, stranding a runner at second and giving him five punchouts on the night.
Holmes (W, 7-3) walked one and scattered four hits. He has allowed one or zero runs in five of his last six Triple-A starts, lasting at least seven innings in four of those outings.
Damien Magnifico and Jesus Liranzo each tossed scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
Indy took control of the series finale in the first, scoring three runs off righty Fernando Romero (L, 2-3) with two outs. Max Moroff singled with one away and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jose Osuna eventually walked to set up a run-scoring single by Kevin Kramer and two-RBI knock off the bat of Christopher Bostick.
Lavarnway's blast opened the home half of the sixth and gave him 19 RBI on the season. The homer traveled an estimated 412 feet to right-center.
The victory sealed a 5-1 season-series win for the Tribe. Indy has won the season series over Rochester in six of the previous nine seasons, including a 5-1 mark in 2015.
Rochester (45-55) has lost nine of its last 10 games.
The game was completed in 2 hours and 11 minutes, the second-quickest nine-inning contest for the Indians this season.
The Indians' homestand continues with a doubleheader on Friday night, starting a five-game weekend series against Buffalo. First pitch of game one is set for 6:05 p.m. EDT. The nightcap will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Tribe righties Tyler Eppler (9-5, 3.48) and Alex McRae (3-8, 4.76) are set to square off against Bisons right-handers Sean Reid-Foley (7-2, 3.56) and Murphy Smith (1-4, 5.12).
