From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Gwinnett overcame a two-run deficit with two runs in the sixth and another in the 10th inning to hand Indy its third straight loss, 3-2. The Indians dropped to 0-2 in extra-inning games this season, as they failed to bring home a run in each of their extra-inning at-bats. Jose Osuna gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out single, and Jacob Stallings added a two-run RBI single of his own in the fourth. Tyler Eppler cruised through the first five innings with just two singles and one walk allowed, but he ran into trouble in the sixth. The Stripers capitalized on a Danny Santana one-out walk with consecutive doubles by Austin Riley and Carlos Franco, the latter leveling the game at 2-2. Peter Bourjos then drove in the winning run with a fielder's choice in the top of the 10th, giving Dovydas Neverauskas his second loss. Jason Hursh earned the win with two shutout innings and Evan Phillips nailed down his fourth save for Gwinnett.

WELCOMING WADDELL: The Indians will send southpaw Brandon Waddell to the bump this evening for his Triple-A debut, marking the first start by a left-hander for Indy this season. Last year, three lefties started games for the Tribe (Steven Brault - 20, Cody Dickson - 6, Antonio Bastardo - 1). Waddell went 2-1 with a 2.68 ERA (16 ER/53.2 IP) in nine games (eight starts) for Double-A Altoona this year. He was listed as Pittsburgh's No. 19 prospect by Baseball America ahead of this season, and that same publication tabbed him with the "Best Changeup" in the Pirates farm system for a second straight campaign. To make room on the roster for Waddell, Pittsburgh transferred 1B/OF Jerrick Suiter to Short-Season A West Virginia.

CLEANING UP: Jose Osuna joined the Tribe yesterday after being optioned by Pittsburgh on May 26, a move that created room for outfielder Starling Marte on Pittsburgh's roster. Osuna picked up where he left off with Indy, recording a two-out RBI single in the first inning last night to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. Osuna has 19 RBI and a .354 average (29-for-82) in 24 games with Indy this year. He is batting .385 (10-for-26) with a homer, four doubles and 15 RBI with runners in scoring position.

FACING A SOUTHPAW: The Indians will face southpaw Michael Mader tonight in just his second career Triple-A start. Mader, 24, shut down Durham with six innings of one-run ball on May 24 at Coolray Field. The Tribe are 10-4 and averaging 5.3 runs per game (74 runs) this season in games where the opponent starts a left-hander.

MCKINNEY RELEASED: Right-handed reliever Brett McKinney was reinstated from the 7-day DL and released by Pittsburgh yesterday. McKinney, 27, was a fireman for Indy last year, going 3-1 with one save and a 3.47 ERA (24 ER/62.1 IP) in 40 games (one start). This year in five appearances, however, he struggled to the tune of a 9.53 ERA (6 ER/5.2 IP) with a 7:5 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

COMMON DENOMINATOR, CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK: Three Indians have 30 or more hits this month. Kevin Newman leads the way with 38 hits, Christopher Bostick has 33 and Jordan Luplow has piled up 30. Last year, there were two different months where the Tribe had three players with 30-plus hits in the same month, doing so in May and August. Bostick contributed to each of those. In May 2017, Austin Meadows (33), Jason Rogers (32) and Bostick (30) accomplished the feat. Then in August, Bostick (33), Edwin Espinal (31) and Newman (30) did so.

SILVER LINING: Three Indians have found success vs. Gwinnett, despite a team average of just .228 (34-for-149) against the Stripers. Jordan Luplow is 6-for-12 (.500), Jose Osuna has hit .429 (6-for-14) and Pablo Reyes has collected four hits in nine at-bats (.444).
