Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Peter Bourjos plated the game-winning run with a fielder's choice to second in the 10th inning, giving the visiting Gwinnett Stripers a 3-2 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday night. The extra-inning defeat was Indy's second of the year and third straight loss overall.
With international rules in effect and a runner placed at second base with no outs to start extra innings, Gwinnett (22-27) made the most of the offseason change. Sal Giardina advanced Rob Brantly to third with a single to left, and Brantly then scored on Bourjos' grounder to Kevin Kramer.
The Tribe scored in their first trip to the plate against Stripers righty Wes Parsons, using a Christopher Bostick double and two-out single by Jose Osuna to jump in front 1-0. Bostick's two-bagger was his team-leading 16th double of the season.
With Tyler Eppler cruising, Indianapolis (25-24) added another run in the fourth off Parsons. Jordan Luplow - who ended the top of the fourth with a spectacular running catch on the warning track in left-center - doubled to start the bottom half. Jacob Stallings then drove him home with a single to center.
Eppler ran into trouble in the sixth and exited when he reached the century mark in pitches. He issued a one-out walk to Danny Santana before Austin Riley split the gap in left-center, bringing the visitors back within one at 2-1. Carlos Franco followed with a run-scoring double of his own to extend his league-leading RBI total to 39.
Eppler was charged with two runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Dovydas Neverauskas (L, 1-2) suffered the loss after allowing the team unearned run to score in the top of the 10th.
Jason Hursh (W, 1-2) tossed two shutout innings for the Stripers to get the game to extras. Evan Phillips retired Stallings, Eric Wood and Wyatt Mathisen in the bottom of the 10th for his fourth save.
The Indians and Stripers meet again on Wednesday, May 30 at The Vic, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. Indy has not yet named its starting pitcher. Gwinnett will send southpaw Michael Mader (1-0, 1.50) to the bump.
