
Bulls Drop Second in a Row to Rochester, 5-2

DURHAM, NC - A four-run fourth inning by the Rochester Red Wings was too much to overcome for the Durham Bulls, as they fell 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at the DBAP.
In his first outing Triple-A outing of 2018, Omar Bencomo retired 16 in a row after allowing one hit, a single by Willy Adames, in the home half of the first. He set down 19-of-20 batters faced and tossed 77 pitches (57 strikes).
The Red Wings broke open a scoreless game in the top of the second with a solo home run by Kennys Vargas, his second of the series and seventh of the season, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Rochester added four runs on five hits, opening with a triple by Nick Gordon. Gordon scored on a single to left by Jake Cave. Then Chris Carter followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot. Later in the frame Nick Buss tripled scoring Wynston Sawyer to extend the Red Wings' lead to 5-0.
The second hit for Durham came in the seventh inning, a single by Jason Coats against Red Wings' reliever Alan Busenitz.
Andrew Velazquez added a third hit in the eighth with a single to left, extending his hitting streak to four games and as he's tallied 10 hits over his last 11 games.
Justin Williams singled to center field following a walk to Jake Bauers, putting runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth. Coats was retired on a check-swing grounder back to the pitcher and Adam Moore reached on an error by shortstop Nick Gordon, scoring Williams and Bauers and cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Velazquez stepped the dish with two out in the final half of the ninth, and went down looking to end the game.
Chih-Wei Hu (L, 1-4) dropped his fourth decision of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings.
The Bulls (29-22) host the Red Wings (26-23) for the finale of a three-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Anthony Banda (4-2, 3.50) is scheduled to face Dietrich Enns (3-5, 5.11) at the DBAP.
