Louisville Bats News Release
BATS DROP GAME ONE: Louisville dropped the opening game of a three-game series to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Tuesday night by a 4-0 score. Former Louisville Cardinal and New Albany, Indiana native Josh Rogers shut down the Bats' offense with 7.0 scoreless innings. Rogers was the first University of Louisville product to start a game against the Bats since Chad Green for the RailRiders on April 27 last season. The loss drops Louisville to 5-10 in series openers in 2018.
AGAINST SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE: The Bats and RailRiders meet for the first time this season, a three-game series at Louisville Slugger Field. Last season, Louisville went 2-4 against Scranton, dropping two separate three-game series. LOU was outscored in those matchups 33-28. The Bats last won the season series against the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees in 2012, when LOU went 6-2 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, including a four-game sweep at Louisville Slugger Field.
SENZEL RETURNS: Top prospect Nick Senzel made his return to Louisville's lineup last night, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout while batting second and playing second base. It was his first game back after being placed on the disabled list with vertigo on May 8. It was his first game since May 3, when he was removed after one plate appearance in Norfolk. Senzel is the first Top 10 prospect to appear in a Bats uniform prior to making his MLB debut since LHP Aroldis Chapman in 2011, and the first position player since OF Jay Bruce in 2008.
50 K'S, 4 WALKS IN LAST 6 GAMES: Louisville pitching has combined to walk just 4 batters in its last 6 games, spanning 53.0 innings. From Thursday through Tuesday, Zach Neal, Rafael De Paula, Domingo Tapia, Anthony DeSclafani, Kyle Crockett, Evan Mitchell, Kevin Quackenbush , Justin Nicolino , Jose Lopez , Jimmy Herget , Brandon Finnegan and Cody Reed have combined for 4 walks and 50 strikeouts. Despite the remarkable 12.5 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the Bats are just 2-4 in their last 6 games.
MAY RECORD: The Bats own a 7-21 record in May this season, including dropping a season-high 6 games to start the month. Since Louisville's had a Triple-A team in 1982, the most losses in a single month is 22, done twice and most recently by the 1993 Redbirds in August.
REHAB STATS: Tonight's starting pitcher for the Bats is Major League rehabber, RHP Anthony DeSclafani. DeSclafani (5/25), along with LHP Brandon Finnegan (4/9) and RHPs David Hernandez (4/20, 23, 25) and Kevin Shackelford (4/22) have 6 combined rehab outings for Louisville this season, compiling an 11.08 ERA, with 16 earned runs in 13.0 innings on the mound. The Bats are just 1-5 when a pitcher makes a rehab outing.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Bats have played in 27 games at Louisville Slugger Field this season, tied for most in the IL with Toledo and Durham, with the Bulls also hosting their 28th game of the 2018 season Wednesday night. The Bats have fared much better at home than on the road this season, batting 11 points higher (.252 to .241), and allowing over an earned less at home (3.66 ERA to 4.91).
SHUTOUT BY THE LAW OF AVERAGES: After not playing in a shutout game for the first 42 games of the season, Louisville has now played in 3 shutout games since, going 1-2 in those games. The Bats lost 4-0 at Indianapolis on May 24, and Tuesday night against the RailRiders. LOU earned its lone shutout win of the season against Durham on Sunday, May 27 by a 5-0 score.
THE IRI 400: Hernan Iribarren went 1-for-2 with 2 walks last night, recording his 397th hit in a Louisville uniform. He is now three hits shy of becoming just the sixth player in Louisville franchise history to reach the 400-hit plateau. Next on the list is Louisville Bats legend Corky Miller, who's currently in 5th place on the all-time list with 416 hits. Aaron Holbert, who played for Louisville when it was both the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals (1995-97) and Cincinnati Reds (2004-06) holds the franchise record with 471 hits in a Louisville uniform.
