In Front of Sold out Education Day Crowd, Chiefs Fall to Mud Hens in Slugfest

Syracuse, NY - In front of a sellout crowd of 12,269 at NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday morning turned afternoon, the Syracuse Chiefs lost to the Toledo Mud Hens, 12-7. Jacob Wilson had four hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored for the Chiefs in the game. The crowd was the 11th largest in NBT Bank Stadium history.

Syracuse (25-25) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Jaff Decker led off with a walk. Two batters later, José Marmolejos also worked a walk to put runners on first and second. Moisés Sierra followed with a single to center field, scoring Decker for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.

Toledo (32-19) went on to score seven unanswered runs, beginning with two in the top of the second. Mikie Mahtook began the inning with a ground-rule double to left field. Jason Krizan followed with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give Toledo a 2-1 advantage.

The Mud Hens extended their lead in the third. Ronny Rodriguez led off the frame with a homer to left-center field, pushing the Toledo lead to 3-1. After Christin Stewart flied out and Dawel Lugo grounded out, Jim Aducci and Mahtook both singled, placing runners on first and third. Krizan followed with a double to the left-field wall, scoring Aducci and Mahtook for a 5-1 Mud Hens edge.

Toledo added a pair of runs in the fourth. Harold Castro began the inning with a single. Rodriguez then homered to right field to give the Mud Hens a 7-1 lead.

The Chiefs began a comeback in the fifth. With one out, Wilson singled, Marmolejos walked, and Sierra singled to load the bases. Matt Hague hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Wilson to cut the Toledo lead to five, 7-2.

Syracuse scored again in the sixth. Bengie Gonzalez walked and Jake Lowery doubled, putting runners on second and third. Two batters later, Decker singled in Gonzalez to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Wilson followed with a double, bringing home Lowery and Decker to trim the Toledo lead to two, 7-5.

The Mud Hens stretched their lead out again, this time in the top of the eighth. With Kade Scivicque at third base and Rodriguez at first, Stewart grounded a ball towards first base that went under the glove of first baseman Matt Hague, allowing Scivicque to score on the error for an 8-5 Toledo lead. Dawel Lugo followed with a single to right field, scoring Rodriguez from third for a 9-5 advantage.

The Chiefs struck back in the bottom of the eighth. Decker led off with a walk, and Wilson followed by crushing a pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run home run that brought the Mud Hens lead back to two, 9-7.

Toledo thwarted the Syracuse comeback again in the ninth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Rodriguez tripled to complete the cycle, scoring Huffman from second and Scivicque from first to extend the Mud Hens lead to four, 11-7. Stewart followed with a single to left field, bringing home Rodriguez to make it 12-7.

Syracuse and Toledo wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night when the Chiefs become the Devices as part of Salute to the Brannock Device © Night at NBT Bank Stadium. RHP Austin Voth will be on the mound for Syracuse with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.
