Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Austin Riley belted a three-run blast as part of a seven-run second inning as the Gwinnett Stripers handed the Indianapolis Indians a lopsided 11-4 loss Wednesday night at Victory Field. Erich Weiss and Pablo Reyes clubbed back-to-back home runs for Indy in the defeat.
Gwinnett (23-27) gained control in the second against left-hander Brandon Waddell, who was making his Triple-A debut. Waddell surrendered a two-run double to Sean Kazmar Jr. and Riley's 423-foot shot to left-center welcomed Casey Sadler out of the bullpen. Carlos Franco roped a triple after the blast and scored moments later on a wild pitch.
Looking to fend off a fourth straight loss, Indianapolis (25-25) began to claw its way back into the game. Eric Wood singled home Jose Osuna in the bottom of the second and two innings later, Weiss and Reyes went yard against Mader to pull Indy back to within four runs at 7-3.
Wood and Weiss were at it again in the sixth against David Peterson, with the latter singling home Wood who doubled with two away to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Following a 42-minute rain delay after the stretch, the Indians were able to put runners on but unable to drive them in. The Tribe left seven total runners on base over the final three innings, while the visitors managed to score a combined four times to complete the scoring.
Waddell (L, 0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits and four walks in 1.2 innings pitched. Chad Bell (W, 2-0) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for Gwinnett.
Indy's pitching staff issued 11 walks on the night, matching the highest total for the Tribe staff in a game ever played at The Vic. The Indians also walked 11 men on July 5, 2000 against Norfolk and on Aug. 12, 1997 against Nashville.
Christopher Bostick, Jacob Stallings, Wood and Weiss all collected two hits apiece in the loss.
The Indians and Stripers conclude their three-game set on Thursday, May 31 at The Vic, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. Indy will send right-hander Alex McRae (1-4, 5.04) to the hill. Gwinnett has not yet named a starter.
