Gwinnett Stripers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Gwinnett Stripers scored a season-high seven runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back in an 11-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians Wednesday night in game two of a three game series at Victory Field.
The win gave the Stripers a season-high four-game winning streak and was their seventh win in their last eight games. It also secured their third consecutive series win.
The big top of the second began when Indianapolis starter Brandon Waddell gave up a leadoff single to Michael Reed. Waddell, who was just called up from Double-A Altoona and making his Triple-A debut, then walked Rio Ruiz to put two runners on with no outs. Sean Kazmar Jr. followed with a double to left, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead. With one out, Waddell walked both Gwinnett starting pitcher Michael Mader and Peter Bourjos to load the bases. Danny Santana grounded out to third, pushing Ruiz across for a 3-0 advantage.
The Indians pulled Waddell and brought Casey Sadler in from the bullpen. Austin Riley greeted Sadler with a long three run homer (4) to left-center, clearing the 418-foot sign to make it 6-0. Carlos Franco then tripled to left center and scored on a wild pitch for the seventh and final run of the inning.
An Eric Wood RBI single in the bottom of the second off Mader cut the lead to 7-1. Two innings later, back-to-back solo homers by Erich Weiss (1) and Pablo Reyes (2) cut the Gwinnett lead to 7-3. The lead shrunk to 7-4 when reliever David Peterson gave up a two-out RBI single to Weiss in the bottom of the sixth.
Gwinnett came back for a run in the top of the seventh off reliever Damien Magnifico as Reed led off with a walk and Ruiz followed with a single to left. Kazmar hit into a double play, pushing Reed to third, then Chris Stewart delivered a two-out single to left-center making it 8-4.
Heavy rains hit Indianapolis at the seventh inning break, putting the game in a delay for 42 minutes.
After the rain delay, the Stripers added two in the top of the eighth; one on an RBI single to right by Ruiz and the other on a sacrifice fly to right by Kazmar to make it a 10-4 game.
Santana closed out the team's highest scoring game in the top of the ninth with a long one-out homer (7) off reliever Jesus Liranzo estimated at 445 feet.
Mader pitched 4.0 innings with five hits, three earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Peterson went 2.0 innings with two hits and one earned run. After the rain delay, Chad Bell (W, 2-0) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings with three hits and one walk. Josh Ravin completed the game with 1.1 innings, one walk and one strikeout.
Waddell lasted only 1.2 innings with two hits, five earned runs and four walks. Sadler tossed 4.1 innings with four hits, two earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Magnifico worked 1.0 inning with three hits, one earned run, two walks and one strikeout. Liranzo pitched 1.0 inning with one hit, one earned run and two strikeouts.
Franco was 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and a triple. Riley also was 2-for-5 with the three-run homer. Santana went 2-for-6 with a single and a solo homer. Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Kazmar was 1-for-4 with a double, a run and three RBIs.
