Game Day Preview: Frontenacs vs IceDogs
December 11, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs (15-5-3-0) play the first of two road games this weekend with a 7:00 pm matchup versus the Niagara IceDogs (6-15-0-1) tonight, marking the first time this season the two teams will meet one another. The Frontenacs moved into the top spot in the East Division with a win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night at Leon's Centre to open a three-games in three-days stretch. Francesco Arcuri scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season, Lucas Edmonds had four points (2G,2A), Jordan Frasca three (1G,2A), and Leevi Meriläinen won his 13th game during the 6-5 victory.
Captain Shane Wright missed his first game while attending Hockey Canada's World Juniors Selection Camp, but the team didn't miss a beat. Assistant Captain Edmonds is confident in keeping the team rolling; "Shane is a big part of our team, but I think we have plenty of guys that have stepped up this season in leadership roles and in different areas." Rookie Paul Ludwinski said, "Everyone knows we need to step up to succeed. We have to fill that hole, and I think we filled it well today (Friday).
Ludwinski skated with Martin Chromiak and Matthew Soto taking over the centre spot on that line. He was able to score a nice second period goal on Friday. He understood the importance of the victory moving forward. "It's exciting, but we aren't halfway through the season. We want to keep it rolling through this three-in-three stretch and leave nothing left in the tank. We are trying to get six out of six this weekend. "
Fronts Rolling
The Frontenacs have not lost since November 27, entering tonight's game on a current league-high six consecutive wins with only one regulation loss in the last 12 games. Head coach Luca Caputi's squad sits just one point back of North Bay (34) for the Eastern Conference lead, two back of London for most points in the OHL. The Fronts have scored a Conference high 4.30 goals-per-game with six players eclipsing the 20-point mark compared to the single 20-point man (Danil Gushchin) for Niagara. Only Gushchin has registered double-digit goals, with the Fronts having five skaters all potting 10 or more.
Niagara Falling
The IceDogs have lost two straight with only a pair of wins in their last 10 games, sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference. Kingston's high-octane offence will look to take advantage of a Niagara squad giving up 101 goals so far, tied with Peterborough for most allowed in the OHL. Mississauga scorched the IceDogs 9-1 on Friday in the team's last game. Gushchin leads the IceDogs in scoring with 24 points. The OHL's 2020 second-overall pick Pano Fimis has had a solid rookie season with 13 points (5G,8A).
