Saginaw Spirit News Release
Erie, PA - The Saginaw Spirit will hope to snap their season-long, four-game losing streak tonight at the Erie Insurance Arena, when they take on the Erie Otters at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Head-to-Head
This will be the fifth of 12 meetings this season between the Spirit and the Otters, who will be well acquainted this season due to new scheduling in the Ontario Hockey League. Saginaw has a 2-1-1-0 record in the previous four meetings, with the last set-two coming back on Oct. 24 when Spirit rookie Dean Loukus scored his first career OHL goal and first career OHL hat trick in the same game, leading the Spirit to a 6-4 victory. Davis "T-Bone" Codd also scored twice in that game, and defenseman Pavel Mintyukov added two assists. On the Erie side, Brett Bressette and Noah Sedore each scored three points in the game. Andrew Oke picked up the victory in goal, by coming in relief of Tristan Lennox in the first period and stopping 15 of 18 shots.
Last Time Out
Saginaw: The Spirit aimed to get the bad taste out of their mouths from last weekend by getting out to an early 3-0 lead Friday night in Guelph. Unfortunately, the Spirit would not hang on, surrendering five unanswered goals for the second straight game. Saginaw would drop their fourth game in a row by a 5-3 score to the Storm.
Erie: The Otters are back home for three of their next four games after finishing five straight away from Erie Insurance Arena with a 9-6 loss to the Flint Firebirds Wednesday night. The Otters held 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2 leads against Flint, but surrendered five, third period goals en route to the 9-6 loss. Overage forward Daniel D'Amato scored his first hat trick in his OHL career and added an assist along with it. Another overage in Brendan Hoffman scored two goals and an assist for the Otters. No OHL team has played more road games (16) and less home games than the Otters (7) coming into tonight's game.
Players to Watch
Saginaw: Matyas Sapovaliv
NHL Central Scouting rates Matyas Sapovaliv as a "B" prospect heading into the 2022 NHL Draft. The Czech born center added a power play goal last night, bringing his season total to seven goals and a team-leading, fourth goal with the man-advantage. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Sapovaliv also recorded an assist Friday night in Guelph. He is back on the scoresheet after having a career-high, six-game point streak snapped on Dec. 2. Sapovaliv has five points in the previous four games against the Otters this season (1g-4a-5pts).
Erie: Daniel D'Amato
Coming off of his first career OHL hat trick, Daniel D'Amato is a driving force on the offensively-starved Erie Otters team. D'Amato is back in the OHL after a recent call up to Henderson in the American Hockey league, top affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. In four games this season against the Spirit, D'Amato has three points (0g-3a-3pts)
