Game 23: November 28 vs. Brandon
November 28, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
VS. WHEAT KINGS: Tonight marks the second meeting of four this season between Brandon and Medicine Hat. The two teams played just a week ago with the Wheaties taking a 6-2 victory in Brandon. In that game Tigers got goals from Chad Butcher and James Hamblin, while Brandon saw 3 point efforts from Reid Duke and Ivan Provorov. Medicine Hat historically against the Wheaties at home over the past 5 seasons has seen a tidy 5-3-0-0 record as they look to improve on that tonight.
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP:
Brandon is coming off of a 4-2 defeat to Lethbridge last night and currently sit 3 points back of Prince Albert for the East Division lead
Medicine Hat has 1 win in their past 5 games (2-1 over Everett) and are 2-6-1-1 in their past 10 games, meanwhile Brandon has also struggled with a record of 5-5-0-0 over their past 10 games
These two teams have almost identical power plays as Brandon sits scoring 16 goals in 100 opportunities (16.0%) and the Tigers also have 16 goals in 99 opportunities (16.2%)
2015-16 WHL RANKINGS: Record (7-12-2-1). Central Div. - 5th Eastern Con. - 11th Home - (6-7-0-1) Away (1-5-2-0)
TIGERS FAST FACTS:
Chad Butcher picked up an assist vs. Red Deer last night and extended his point streak to 8 games, recording 3 goals and 8 assists over that span and has now tied Steven Owre's 8 game point streak earlier this season for the longest streak
The Tigers went 0 for 6 with the power play on November 18th in Brandon, unable to capitalize on a 5 minute major man advantage, however they have scored a power play goal in 5 of their last 6 games at home
Medicine Hat has only 1 victory over the East Division this season (1-4-1-0), a 3-2 overtime win in Saskatoon in Game 3 of the year, Steven Owre had the game winner in that one
SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS: What a difference a year can make for the Medicine Hat Tigers as looking back on the 2014-15 season saw the orange and black outshoot their opponent on a regular basis, 60 of 72 games to be exact. Medicine Hat sported a record of 37-19-2-2 when they outshot their competitors and a 8-3-0-0 record when they didn't, still impressive for a team who just narrowly missed capturing the Central Division. This season saw a player turnover greater than any team before, losing 11 guys before the season started. The rookies have done well this year, providing depth scoring with the likes of Gerlach and Shaw. This season the Tigers have outshot their opponents 16 times but hold a record of 5-9-2-0 and are winless when they get outshot by their opponents 0-3-0-1.
LEAVING ON A BUS: For the Medicine Hat Tigers the next stretch of games come on the road, as do many games in the final month of 2015 as the first week long road trip occurs starting Monday in the Western British Columbia. The boys will travel to Victoria to kick off a 4 game in 5 night stretch, a grueling grind for any hockey player and it sees lots of hours on the bus and many late nights. After Victoria, the Tabbies have a date with last year's scoring leader Trevor Cox and the Vancouver Giants before heading over to Kelowna and Kamloops. Medicine Hat will play 14 games in the month of December but fans will only see 4 of those at the Canalta Centre, starting December 9th against these same Rebels.
