Regina Pats News Release
Red Deer, Alberta - The Regina Pats (12-11-2-0) closed out their swing through Alberta by taking on the Red Deer Rebels (19-8-0-0) for the third time in 15 days. Tyler Brown made 37 saves, but the Pats dropped a 2-1 decision.
Nobody was surprised to see the Red Deer Rebels come out strong against the Pats with the Blue and White having won the first two games between the clubs. The Pats didn't help their case, taking three penalties in the first period. The penalty kill did its job, getting through all three due in part to some fantastic pad saves by Tyler Brown. The Rebels finally broke through on a Pats powerplay. A giveaway at the offensive blue-line turned into a partial break for Jeff de Wit. The Rebels penalty killer fought off a check, gathered the loose puck and lifted it over a sprawling Brown to put the score at 1-0 Red Deer after twenty.
Red Deer continued to press in the middle frame thanks to their powerplay. The Rebels had three more chances on the powerplay and carried a fourth over into the third period. This time, the hosts picked up a goal off a bad break for the Pats. Brown made a good stop on a Conner Bleackley one-timer, but Sergey Zborovskiy inadvertently swatted the puck into his own net. Despite all the powerplay time and pressure from the Rebels, the Pats held their opponents to nine shots in the period. Going the other way, the Queen City Kids could only generate five shots of their own and went to the third period trailing by a 2-0 score.
The Pats penalty kill continued to hold the Rebels off the board and had to face down another two full penalties along with the carry-over from the second period. As the frame rolled into its late stages, the Pats started to pull closer with some powerplay work of their own. In the back-half of a double minor, Lane Zablocki jammed home a Connor Hobbs rebound to bring the score within a 2-1 count. That was as close as the Pats would come. The Rebels locked things down in the final two minutes, preventing the Pats from sustaining an attack. The final horn sounded with the Pats falling 2-1.
Quick Hits - The Pats penalty kill turned away a season high eight powerplays. - Tyler Brown was named the first star for the second straight game in Red Deer. - Game attendance was 6081.
What's Next? The Pats make the long trip back to Regina tonight. Despite returning to the Queen City, the Pats have three more road games remaining starting in Saskatoon on Wednesday. Puck drop in that game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
