Kennewick, WA - The Spokane Chiefs (13-9-2-1, 29 pts) scored three goals in the first period, but the Tri-City Americans (10-15-1-0, 21 pts) responded with three goals in the second period, and notched two in the third to come from behind and earn a 6-5 win in front of 4,255 fans at the Toyota Center on Saturday Night.
Spokane struck first 3:28 into the game. Dominic Zwerger fired a puck at the net, which deflected off an Americans' skate and into the goal on the power play for a 1-0 lead. A minute later, the Americans answered, as Jordan Topping passed it to Brian Williams, one-timing a shot into the twine to even the score at one. The Chiefs retook the lead midway through the first, as Markson Bechtold fired a shot from the right faceoff circle, beating Evan Sarthou stick side for a 2-1 advantage. Bechtold scored his second of the game in the final minute of the first on the power play, giving Spokane a 3-1 lead after the first period.
Tri-City cut the lead to 3-2 early in the second on the power play, as Parker Bowles lit the red lamp. The Chiefs responded with a goal of their own, with Ethan McIndoe cleaning up a rebound for a 4-2 lead. Midway through the second, the Americans cut the lead to one goal, as Brian Williams fired a pass to Jordan Topping streaking through the middle, firing a shot stick side into the net. Spokane pushed the lead back to two goals two minutes later, as a 5-on-3 power play opened the door for Adam Helewka to score his second of the night. Late in the second, Tyler Sandhu banged home a rebound to cut the lead to 5-4 going into the third period.
It was a tense third period, with both teams accumulating scoring chances. Tri-City finally broke through 14:25 into the period, as Bowles fired a shot from the right faceoff circle, beating Lasse Petersen glove side to tie the game. About a minute later, Parker Wotherspoon found the back of the net on a wrist shot to put the Americans in front 6-5. Spokane pressed late to tie the game, but the Americans buckled down defensively to hold on for the win.
Tri-City snaps a three-game losing streak against Spokane.
Special teams were big in this game, with Tri-City converting 2-of-5 power play chances and recording 18 penalty minutes. Spokane was 3-of-8 with at least a man advantage, and spent 12 minutes in the penalty box.
