Indy Fuel News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Finishing off back-to-back Central Division matchups, Indy Fuel (6-10-0-0) visited the Cincinnati Cyclones (12-5-1-0) for the first time this season. Cincinnati opened the scoring in the first period with a short side shot over the shoulder of Williams and would hold on to that lead until the third when they scored two back-to-back goals on Indy. The Fuel would respond with two goals of their own but it would be too little, too late for Indy as they fell 3-2 on Saturday night.
Both teams traded offensive throughout the first period, and both goaltenders were up to the task, stopping point-blank chances from each side. Cincinnati got the first scoring chance when Ben Johnson fed a spinning pass to Jesse Schultz, who beat Charles Williams (23 SVS) on the glove side. The goal was eventually reviewed by referees and called no goal. Minutes later, Cincinnati took the lead off of a difficult bounce in Indy's defensive zone when Edwardh beat Williams short side, giving Cincinnati a 1-0 lead.
Each team was handed power play chances throughout the second period but neither team was able to break through. Just under eight minutes into the period, Jake Ryczek got a chance in front of the Cincinnati net but Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (25) robbed Ryczek with the glove. Indy was given two power play chances in the middle stanza but was unable to get anything going through the four minutes of power play time.
Cincinnati took control of the game in the third period, when Justin Baudry capitalized on a Bobby MacIntyre cross-checking penalty feeding Jesse Schultz a cross-ice pass on the power play, who fired a wrist shot into Indy's net, giving Cincinnati a 2-0 lead.. Almost immediately, an unlucky bounce came to Ben Johnson, who fired a slap shot from the blueline, beating Williams to take the 3-0 lead.
Indy got their first goal of the game on the power play when Spencer Watson walked in from the blueline and fired a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle, cutting the Cyclones lead to 3-1. The Fuel cut the lead to one goal when an Joe Sullivan was bumped into Luukkonen by a Cyclones defenseman and Alex Brooks fired the puck into the net. The goal was immediately reviewed by referees and was ruled a good goal. Indy would have several chances with an empty net but the Cyclones held on to win Saturday's game 3-2.
