Florence Y'alls News Release
(Florence, KY) -The Florence Freedom (7-12), presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, fell behind due to a grand slam and their comeback effort came up short as Florence dropped a close one to the Lake Erie Crushers (6-11) by a score of 7-6 Friday night.
After Florence fell behind 2-0 in the first inning on a Juan Sanchez home run, the Freedom rallied in the third. Travis Weaver started the threat with a lead off single and stole second base. Mason Salazar ripped a ground rule double just inside the right field line that plated Weaver. Zack Burling walked and Austin Newell singled to load the bases. After consecutive pop ups from Cody Bishop and Ozzy Gonzalez, Sam Eberle delivered with two outs, singling to bring home Burling and Salazar. Florence led 3-2 after three.
Lake Erie regained the lead on one swing of the bat in the fifth. Anderson Hidalgo smashed a Casey Henn (1-4) pitch over the left field fence to give the Crushers a 6-3 lead.
Henn, tossed four and two thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while fanning six Crushers.
Florence chipped away at the deficit in the sixth. Lake Erie led 7-3 when Steve Carrillo walked to lead off the inning. Carrillo stole second to put himself in scoring position. Daniel Fraga brought Carrillo home, smashing an RBI double into the left center field gap. The Freedom trailed 7-4 after six.
The Freedom got another run back in the seventh. Austin Newell provided some fireworks of his own on Fireworks Friday, lifting a home run over the right field fence to pull Florence within two, at 7-5. The Freedom would load the bases that inning but leave them all stranded.
Florence loaded the bases again in the eighth. Daniel Fraga singled to start the rally and moved to third on a Sean Mahley single. Newell walked to load the bases for the second straight inning. Cody Bishop sent a ball into center field that was misplayed, allowing Fraga to score. With the bases loaded and trailing by a run the next three Freedom batters were retired to end the threat.
Tony Vocca and Ethan Gibbons were effective out of the 'pen for Florence. Vocca fired two scoreless innings and struck out two Crushers. Gibbons pitched a scoreless ninth inning on his 25th birthday.
Florence left another man in scoring position in the ninth. Overall the Freedom left 13 men on base in the loss.
