Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Florence Freedom, 7-6, on Friday night at UC Health Stadium in Florence, using the long ball to end the losing streak.

For the Crushers (6-11), the win was their first win since May 27, and they improved their record to 4-3 on the road. With the loss, the Freedom (7-12) have lost eight out of their last 10.

The Crushers struck first as many were still finding their seats. Trevor Stevens led off the game with a double to right. Juan Sanchez then followed that up with a two-run home run to left before the first out was recorded. The Freedom starter, Casey Henn (1-4) settled down after the homer and pitched well in the second, third and fourth innings, only allowing two combined hits in those innings.

The Freedom responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take the lead. The eight and nine hitters started the big inning as shortstop Travis Weaver led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Weaver went home on a ground-rule double to right off the bat of Mason Salazar. After Zack Burling walked and Austin Newell doubled to load the bases, Freedom first baseman, Sam Ederle hit a two-run single to left.

The Crushers came right back in the fifth inning as Parker Norris hit a one-out single, followed by a Trevor Stevens single and a two-out Jose Barraza walk. Anderson Hidalgo capped the inning with a Grand Slam to left that would put the Crushers back on top 6-3 for the moment.

In the top of the sixth, the Crushers would add one more on an RBI single off the bat of Jose Barraza, scoring Frank Desico as the rain began to fall.

Zac Treece would throw two pitches to the Freedom third baseman Steve Carrillo before the game was delayed nine minutes for rain in the bottom of the sixth. After the delay, Treece walked Carrillo and later in the inning with two outs and Trevor Longfellow on the mound, pinch hitter Daniel Fraga hit an RBI double.

The Freedom would add one in the seventh as Austin Newell led the inning off with a home run but after a walk, single and a walk loaded the bases, the Crushers bullpen was able to get out the jam with the lead.

Again, Florence would score in the bottom of the eighth as Fraga singled to start the inning. Sean Mahley, a pinch hitter earlier in the game, singled and the Newell walked. A misplay in the outfield by Parker Norris resulted in a run as Norris over ran the ball in center for an error.

With bases loaded and nobody out, the combination of Brad Duffy and Mike Devine got the Freedom to pop out, strike out and ground out to end the inning.

Crushers starter Peter Gehle went three innings surrendering seven hits and three earned runs. The win went to Zac Treece (1-0) who pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run while walking one and striking out one Freedom hitter. Mike Devine (1) closed the game by going 1.2 innings. The Freedom starter Casey Henn went 4.2 innings allowing seven hits and six earned runs while striking out six Crushers. The two teams used 11 pitchers combined.

The Crushers will continue their three-game road series with the Florence Freedom at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky on Saturday night. Right-hander Rob Blanc (0-0, 0.84) will begin on the mound for the Crushers, and the Freedom will start right-hander David Duncan (0-0, 6.42 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
