Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners again received great pitching at The Corn Crib, as Ryan Brockett pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first professional win, getting the victory for the Miners in a pitcher's duel as they beat the Normal CornBelters by a 3-0 final score.
The win, which improved the team to 7-1 away from Rent One Park and represented the 199th road win in franchise history, came courtesy of a stellar outing from their starter as well as a couple clutch hits. Brockett (1-1) gave up just two hits and three walks in his six frames, fanning five Normal batters as the Miners' pitching staff held the CornBelters bats nearly silent for the second day in a row.
The Miners offensively jumped on top right away. Jerrud Sabourin, with two outs in the first, doubled inside third for one of his three hits in the contest and was followed immediately by Frank Martinez, who extended his hitting streak out to nine in a row with an RBI single to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.
Southern Illinois then tacked on two more in the sixth. After Brendan Slattery led off with a single, with one out in the frame, Michael Earley battled Normal starter Chris Carmain (3-1) to the tune of a nine-pitch at-bat. On pitch number nine, Earley hit a high fly ball to left that went over the fence and eluded the glove of the left fielder for a two-run homer. The outfielder's first long ball of the season gave Southern Illinois a 3-0 lead that would stand up thanks to the bullpen, with Will Rankin getting his eighth save by pitching the ninth.
The shutout was the Miners' third such victory of the season, all of which have come on the road. Carmain pitched the full nine innings, but took the loss for the CornBelters, the second time this season a pitcher opposing the Miners went the distance but did not win the game.
Southern Illinois will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon, with a 3:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch. Miguel Ramirez will take the ball for the Miners against Normal right-hander Kevin Johnson.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
