Lake Erie Crushers News Release
FLORENCE, Kentucky -- The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Florence Freedom, 5-3, on Saturday evening at UC Health Stadium in Florence, marking the first Crushers two game winning streak since May.
With the win, the Crushers (7-11) have now won four out of their last five road games. The Freedom (7-13) have now gone 2-12 following a 5-1 start, after the loss tonight.
For the second night in a row, the Crushers scored the first runs of the game. Austin Prott hit a two out, line drive over the right field wall for his first home run of the season.
The Freedom then tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning. Daniel Fraga walked to lead off the inning and Austin Newell followed with a single, moving Fraga to third. Fraga would come home on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Sam Eberle, tying the game at one.
In the fourth inning, the Crushers would retake the lead. Juan Sanchez singled to right and moved to second on a single by Jose Barraza, then advanced to third on an error after the ball skipped over Cody Bishop's head in center. Anderson Hidalgo was then hit by a pitch and went to the ground in pain. After several minutes he ran to first and stayed in the game. Ty Nelson followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Sanchez.
Again, the Crushers had a big fifth inning. Emmanuel Quiles doubled to lead off the inning. Sanchez then hit a two out RBI single and Jose Barraza immediately followed by hitting a double to left, scoring Sanchez. Still with two out, Hidalgo singled to score Barraza.
The Freedom responded by scoring one run in the fifth when Newell walked to lead off the inning. He moved to second after Eberle was hit by a pitch and went to third when Bishop flew out to right. Newell crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Crushers starter Rob Blanc. Florence left three runners on base when pitcher Matt Brankle (1-0), making his first appearance as a Crusher, got out of the inning.
The Freedom scored the last run of the game as Newell singled to lead off the ninth and came around to score on a double play ball.
The Crushers starting pitcher Blanc, went 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and allowing two earned runs. Brankle went 1.2 scoreless innings. Zac Treece (1) went 1.1 innings, giving up one run and striking out two. For the Freedom, starter David Duncan (0-1) went 4.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. Florence's three pitchers out of the bullpen threw 4.1 scoreless innings.
The Crushers will look for the sweep as they wrap up their three-game series with the Florence Freedom at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky on Sunday night. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (0-1, 0.96) will start for the Crushers, and the Freedom starter will be announced tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
