Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL- Behind sixteen hits the Evansville Otters (14-6) hand the Joliet Slammers (8-12) their second straight loss on Saturday night by an 8-2 score.
The Slammers got on the board in the second inning against Tyler Vail. DH Russell Moldenhauer and 3B Mike Garza led off with back-to-back singles. 1B Adam Giacalone walked to load the bases and Moldenhauer scored when 2B Max Casper grounded into a double play. The Slammers led 1-0 after two frames.
The Otters pulled ahead with a five-run fifth inning with pitcher Kevin Walter, who was making his Slammers debut, on the hill. Former Slammers catcher JD Dorgan reached on a lead-off infield single. SS Cory Urquhart bunted him over to second. CF Ronnie Richardson doubled up the left-field line to score Dorgan, tying the game at one. DH Kurt Wertz Jr. hit a bouncing ball that went off Walter's glove rolling harmlessly to third, giving the batter time to reach first. With runners at the corners, 3B Shayne Houck popped out. With two outs, 1B Nik Balog singled to drive a run. RF Chris Sweeney reached on a base-knock, and LF John Schultz drove in Balog with a single. With the score 3-1, a pitch from Walter went off the glove of catcher Jack Cleary, allowing Sweeney to score. The Otters would scrape across one more one in the frame, to go up 5-1 after the fifth.
Evansville padded their lead with three more runs in the sixth. With two outs and two on, 3B Shayne Houck cranked a three-run homer over the left field fence. It was Houck's fifth homer of the year, giving the Otters an eight-run lead.
The Slammers had opportunities to score in the sixth and seventh innings, loading the bases in each frame but failing to push a run across. They would score a run in the ninth. CF Charlie White doubled with one out, and with two outs Phil Bates drove him in with a two-bagger. That would be Joliet's final run, as the Slammers fell 8-2 to the Otters.
