Freedom and Rascals Split Double Header

(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (16-20) scored six runs over the first two innings to grab hold of game one in Saturday night's double header against the River City Rascals (23-15) but they gave up runs early and often in game two as they split the twin bill.
The final score in game one was 8-1 in favor of the Freedom but they took a beating in a 9-2 loss in game two.
Florence took advantage of the wildness of River City starter Tim Koons (0-2) to score two runs in the first inning of game one. The game was resumed Saturday after Ryan Miller had walked on Friday night to begin the bottom of the first before the rain suspended the game. Sam Eberle and Cole Miles followed with walks of their own on Saturday to load the bases. Joe Staley reached on an error and Miller scored on the play to put Florence up 1-0. One out later Rob Kelly delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
They would put the game away in the second inning by scoring four runs off Koons. With one away Miller and Eberle both drew walks and Miles singled home Miller for the Freedom's third run of the game. Then Staley lined a pitch over the wall in dead center field for his team-leading fifth home run of the season and just like that it was 6-0 Florence.
Meanwhile, on the mound it was the Chuck Weaver (3-1) show for the Freedom. He went seven innings for the victory, scattering five hits and only giving up one run. Weaver did not walk anyone and struck out three.
River City's only run in game one came in the fourth on a Curran Redal RBI grounder.
The Freedom added a run in the sixth on a Bobby Joe Tannehill solo home run and a run in the seventh on Ben Kline RBI single.
Game two didn't go so well. Brent Choban (0-2) struggled on the mound, surrendering three home runs, and Tommy Mendoza (2-0) quieted the Freedom's bats with five shutout innings.
A Josh Ludy solo home run got River City on the board in the second. Johnny Morales added a RBI single in the third and a bloom double by Ludy later in the inning put the Rascals up 3-0. The big blow came in the fourth when Morales took Choban deep for a three-run home run to extend the lead for River City to 6-0.
They would add two more in the fifth and one more in the seventh before the Freedom finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out Staley singled up the middle. Then Kline tripled him home for the Freedom's first run of the game. An Orrin Sears RBI grounder gave the Freedom their second run of the inning but it was too little, too late.
Florence will look to win the rubber match of the series Sunday evening as Casey Henn (2-2, 4.13 ERA) takes the mound. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. eastern time. Reserved seats are sold out but fans can still get lawn tickets for what should be a great night of baseball at UC Health Stadium.
