Slammers Crushed 17-3 on Saturday

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-were crushed by the Gateway Grizzlies 17-3 on Saturday night at Silver Cross Field.

Jake Hermsen, the NIU grad, got off to a rough start for Joliet. He gave up 9 runs in the 2nd inning on six hits. Richard Seigel's 3-run homer, Michael Johnson's 2-run triple and Madison Beaird's 2-run single were the big hits of the frame. Niko Vasquez' 2-run homer against Hermsen highlighted the 3rd inning to help make it 12-0. Travis Reboulet came on in relief in the 4th for the Slammers. He gave up three runs of his own in the 4th on a solo homer from Seigel, an RBI single from TJ Bennett and a bases loaded walk to make it 15-0.

Joliet finally dented the scoreboard on a 2-run double from Danny Hernandez in the bottom of the 4th to make it 15-2. An RBI grounder from Seth Granger in the 6th made it 15-3. Reboulet settled in and added three shutout innings of relief before being lifted for Jordan Wellander in the 8th inning. Slammers' shortstop Max Casper then came on to pitch the 9th for Joliet. In the inning Vasquez homered and Seigel picked up his 6th hit of the game and 5th RBI with a single to make the score 17-3. Casper singled in the 9th for Joliet and that means he now has a 14-game hitting streak and has reached base in 18 of the Slammers last 19 games. The win gives Gateway a league-best record of 27-13 while Joliet falls to 15-22.

The Slammers conclude their three-game home stand with Sunday's 1:05pm contest. It will be a Family Sunday featuring Mascot Mania. All youngsters will get a chance to run the bases after the game and get autographs from the players. The team will then play three games in Schaumburg before returning home for 4th of July weekend. There will be fireworks after the games on Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th. Sunday the 6th will be a Bark in the Park day.
