Crushers fall to Wild Things

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers committee a trio of costly errors on Saturday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as they fell to the Washington Wild Things, 5-3.

The Crushers (19-19) have now committed seven errors in their last two games, while for the Wild Things (24-14) the victory was their third in a row, and their fourth in their last five games.

Defensive issues haunted the Crushers in their loss on Friday night, and they committed three on Saturday evening, with all three costing them runs.

Lake Erie scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Ford started the inning with a double down the left field line, before advancing to third on Emmanuel Quiles's groundout, and he scored on Andrew Davis sacrifice fly.

The Wild Things took advantage of the first Lake Erie error in the third inning, where they scored three runs on three hits. Daniel Poma and Garrett Rau stroked back-to-back singles, before CJ Beatty reached on Anderson Hidalgo's errant throw, which allowed Poma to score. The next batter, Stewart Ijames belted a two-run homer, his 12th of the season.

The Crushers capitalized on Washington's lone error in the bottom of the fourth. A two out walk was issued to Craig Hertler, and he scored moments later on Ryan Hutchison's single. Hutchison singled to center, and Poma's throw from center to third, ended up in the Crushers dugout, which brought Hertler home.

It didn't take the Wild Things long to respond, as they plated a run in the top of the fifth. Poma's third hit of the game was a double to left, and he scored on Beatty's two-out single to center.

Lake Erie scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Davis began the inning on a double down the left field line, and Hertler followed two batters later, as he delivered his seventh hit of the season with runners in scoring position and two outs, with a double to plate Davis.

Errors contributed to Washington's final run in the top of the seventh. Rau walked to start the inning, and advanced to second when Ijames reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, second baseman Matt Dickason dropped a throw from Juan Sanchez at short, which put two on with one out, and the next batter, Carter Bell reached on a fielder's choice, but an error by Sanchez on the relay throw to first brought Rau home.

Matt Rein (0-3) took the loss for the Crushers, allowing four runs on nine hits through 5.2 innings of action while fanning four along the way. Washington's Chris Phelan (5-2) allowed three runs, two earned on four hits over five innings and came away with the victory. Jonathan Kountis (15) scored the save for the second night in a row, by working a scoreless ninth inning.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Righty Zac Treece (1-1, 1.85) will throw for the Crushers and the Wild Things will counter with left-hander Zac Fuesser (3-1, 1.34). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
