Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
MARION, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners put together seven runs across three straight innings and staved off the Traverse City Beach Bums to take a 7-4 victory on Saturday night at Rent One Park.
Yazy Arbelo put Traverse City on top 1-0 with a solo homer in the top of the second, but Southern Illinois countered with a pair of runs in the last of the third on a two-run, two-out bloop single from Chris Burke.
The Beach Bums tied the game in the top of the fourth on an Arbelo single plating Jeff DeBlieux, but the tie was short-lived as the Miners got two more runs in the last of the fourth. An error enabled Matt Howard to reach before a Ryan Cavan single put two on for Phil Butler who smashed a two-run ground rule double to make it 4-2.
Traverse City got a Chris Cowell homer in the top of the fifth to crawl within 4-3, but again an error cost the Bums dearly in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and runners at first and second, shortstop Josh Miller short-hopped a throw to first allowing Chris Burke to score, putting the Miners on top 5-3. After a hit batter, Tyler Booth singled off the glove of Arbelo at first to drive in two more unearned runs and open the advantage to 7-3.
DeBlieux led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rob Benedict to cut the deficit to 7-4, but the Beach Bums would get no closer.
Rick Teasley (5-0) battled his way through five innings to stay perfect on the year for Southern Illinois, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Casey Delgado (5-2) took the loss for Traverse City, allowing seven runs, only three of which were earned, in six innings on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. The outing was Delgado's fifth quality start of the year.
Arbelo led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. He's now 6-for-8 in the first two games of the series with two runs scored and four batted in.
The Beach Bums and Miners finish up their three-game series on Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. ET. Ian MacDougall (1-2, 4.15) will start for Traverse City against Southern Illinois' Michael Carden (1-3, 2.50). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 5:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
