Wild Things Win Again 5-3

Avon, OH-For the second time in as many days, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, came out victorious against the Lake Erie Crushers by a final score of 5-3. Starter Chris Phelan earned the win for Washington and Wild Things closer Jonathan Kountis picked up his league-leading 15th save.

Lake Erie jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Andrew Davis knocked a sacrifice fly into center field that scored left fielder Adam Ford.

The 1-0 Crushers lead was erased in the top of the third when Washington center fielder Daniel Poma plated off of a Lake Erie throwing error to tie the game. The stalemate ended shortly after thanks to right fielder Stewart Ijames, who belted a two-run homer to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Ijames has been on fire for Washington as of late, going 10-23 in his last six games, including four home runs.

Lake Erie capitalized on a Washington blunder in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Ryan Hutchison scored on a Wild Things throwing error to make it 3-2. Washington regained their two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning when Beatty plated Poma with an RBI single to take the score to 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Crushers threatened with their most offensively productive at-bats, highlighted by an RBI double from center fielder Craig Hertler that pushed the score to 4-3. Solid pitching from Wild Things reliever Tyler Elrod held the potential comeback to just one run, however.

The contest took a scarier note in the top half of the seventh inning when Ijames was struck in the face with the ball while trying to advance to second base. The Lake Erie throwing error allowed Washington shortstop Garrett Rau to score and make it a 5-3 game.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kountis came on as the fifth pitcher of the night for the Wild Things and did not disappoint. A one-two-three inning awarded Kountis his 15th save on the season and Washington their third win in a row.

The Wild Things will go for the three-game sweep against the Crushers in an early afternoon contest on Sunday, June 29. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. at All Pro Freight Stadium.
