Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used a big sixth inning to take control of a back-and-forth game and defeat the Frontier Greys 9-5 on Saturday night at the Corn Crib for their third straight win.
The Greys plated a run in the first inning with a two-out walk to Joe Rapp, a passed ball and an RBI double by Greg Bachman. The Belters matched the run in their first time at bat with a line drive home run over the left field fence by Santiago Chirino, then took a 2-1 lead in the frame after base hits from Mike Schwartz and Sam Judah, a wild pitch and a ground out RBI by Aaron Dudley.
The Belters added a run for a 3-1 lead with a two-out rally in the third beginning with a Tyler Shover single, an error allowing Jhiomar Veras to reach base and an RBI single by Chirino. The Belters loaded the bases, but a line drive by Judah was caught at the left field fence by Greys outfielder Cameron Monger to prevent a grand slam home run.
The Greys regained the lead at 4-3 in the fifth inning on back-to-back home runs, a two-run drive by Chris Ellison and a solo shot by Joe Rapp. The Belters surged back in front with two long balls of their own, a two-run opposite field homer by Ozney Guillen and a grand slam by Aaron Dudley to take a 9-4 advantage.
The Greys cut the deficit to 9-5 in the seventh when Monger led off with a walk and scored on a base hit by Bachman.
Charley Short (3-0) earned the win with three innings of relief while Greys starter Kyle Blair (1-2) took the loss.
The series concludes Sunday at the Corn Crib with a 6 p.m. first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Bobby Shore (2-1, 3.96 ERA) matches up against Greys righty Brandon Rohde (3-2, 2.70). Pre-game begins at 5:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . The Belters return home July 8 to begin a four-game homestand starting with the Joliet Slammers beginning with a doubleheader that night, but first hit the road for six games opening with a three-game series at Windy City on Tuesday through Thursday followed by three-games next weekend at Schaumburg.
