Lord Ludy Belts Two as Rascals Split Double-Header

In Game One of the Saturday double-header, River City sent rookie starter Tim Koons to the mound for his second professional start. After the Rascals stranded two in the top of the first, Koons faced a little bit of adversity in the bottom of the inning as he walked four leading to two runs for Florence-one run earned and the other unearned on an error by first-baseman Saxon Butler.

The Freedom continued their offensive showing in the bottom of the second by scoring four more runs on an RBI single by Cole Miles and a 400-foot, three-run blast to centerfield by Joe Staley. The Rascals would follow suit by finally putting a run on the board in the top of the fourth courtesy of an RBI groundout by Curran Redal.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the sixth when ninth-place hitter Bobby Joe Tannehill hit his fourth homerun of the season to make the score 7-1 Florence. Koons then exited the ballgame for Brook after six innings where he allowed seven runs-six earned-on three hits while walking six and striking out five.

Kyle Brady then came in to relive Koons out of the pen and allowed a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Ben Kline to make it a seven-run deficit for River City. The score would then remain the same for the rest of the contest as River City lost 8-1 in game one of the Saturday double-header at U.C. Health Stadium.

In Game Two the Rascals looked to rebound from a loss as they faced lefty Brent Choban. In the first, both pitchers threw well, each setting the batters down one-two-three. The game would be scoreless no longer however, after the one-out homerun by Josh Ludy-his league-leading 12th of the season-in the top of the second.

River City then added two more runs in the top of the third on RBI knocks by both Johnny Morales and Josh Ludy-making it 3-0 Rascals. Then, after another scoreless half-inning from Mendoza, River City doubled its lead on a two-out, three-run homerun by shortstop Johnny Morales.

Lord Ludy would then belt his second homerun of the game-and 13th of the season-before Evan Crawford drove in another run with two outs to put River City up 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Mendoza would then exit after pitching five shutout innings while allowing only two hits and striking out five.

After Bryce Shafer came out of the bullpen to make his Rascals debut-striking out the side-River City added yet another run on an RBI groundout by Curran Redal to make it a 9-0 ballgame heading into the bottom of the seventh at U.C. Health Stadium.

Lefty Patrick Crider came in out of the pen in the bottom of the seventh to lock down the win for Brook and the Rascals-allowing two, making the final score 9-2-giving Mendoza his second win of the season and Brent Choban his second loss of the season.
