Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Barry Fowler got his first start of the season - the first start of his professional career -- and was sensational through 5.2 innings.
Too bad the Goldeyes bullpen gave up two runs and too bad the Goldeyes hitters couldn't answer Gary's pair in the seventh.
On a chilly, damp Friday night at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes 35-year-old rookie starter allowed no runs on only one hit - and also allowed only one base runner - over 5.2 innings and yet it wasn't good enough to record the victory.
Despite the fact Fowler left the game with his Fish up 1-0, the Gary SouthShore RailCats came back with two runs in the top of the seventh and beat the Goldeyes 2-1. Gary finished with two runs on only five hits, while the Goldeyes could manage only one run on nine scattered singles.
"I always felt I could compete at the professional level," said Fowler, who had a perfect game going through the first five innings. "I've always believed I just needed the chance to see how far I could take it. God has blessed me with the ability to pitch. I just needed the opportunity to get out on the mound. That was the hardest part. Just getting the chance.
"Tonight I did what I always try to do. I got the sinker down, threw strikes and got a lot of ground balls. That's what I do."
The Goldeyes, who went 4-9 against Gary last year, just couldn't get anything going after scoring in the first inning.
In the first, Price Kendall, who had four hits in four trips, singled, went to third on a single by Kody Kaiser and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wes Long.
But that was it. The RailCats scored twice off reliever Ian Thomas in the seventh and improved to 7-7 on the season while the Goldeyes fell to 8-7.
Saturday night, the Goldeyes and RailCats will meet in Game 2 of this three-game series. Dustin Glant (1-2, 6.39) will get the start for Winnipeg while Nolan Nicholson (0-3, 9.72) will toe the rubber for Gary. Game time is 6 p.m.
The game can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290 or seen live on Shaw TV, Channel 9 in Winnipeg and Channel 299 on Shaw Direct nationally.
