Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX.---Less than 24 hours after the Captains four-hour 10-inning conquest of El Paso finished, Shreveport-Bossier found themselves locked in another late-inning hi-offense contest with the Grand Prairie AirHogs, ultimately falling 13-12 on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.
AirHogs designated hitter John Alonso's fly ball to left field was just deep enough to score second baseman David Espinosa with the winning run in the first game of the Captains three-game series with Grand Prairie.
The fly to left ended a night that saw seven home runs combined between the two teams, including three fifth inning homers by the Captains and back-to-back long balls by Grand Prairie in the sixth, after the team had hit just two home runs all year coming into the contest.
Shreveport-Bossier's Andres Rodriguez extended his hit streak to 10 games with a three-for-five night including a solo home run in the second inning. Uriak Marquez also extended his streak to 11 games with a solo home run of his own in the fifth inning. Bryan Sabatella (1-for-5, 4 RBIs) also homered in the fifth as did catcher Brian Peterson, his first jack of the year. Joe Urtuzuastegui hit his first homer of the year in the top of the sixth.
Shreveport-Bossier lost for the first time all year when scoring first. They led 1-0 after an inning and a half on Rodriguez's third home run of the year. The Captains would take a 2-0 lead on Sabatella's RBI ground out in the third. Grand Prairie took the lead with three in the third off Shreveport-Bossier starter Osvaldo Rodriguez thanks to a David Thomas sacrifice fly and a two run double by Cesar Nicolas. The AirHogs would add to the lead in the fourth, with RBI doubles for Tyler Henley, Jake Taylor and Espinosa.
Shreveport-Bossier regained the lead 7-6 with five in the fifth, including Sabatella's three-run shot and solo home runs for Peterson and Marquez. The AirHogs tied it in the next half inning with a Taylor sacrifice fly to center. Captains center fielder Joey Gathright saved two more runs from scoring with a fully-outstretched backhanded diving catch in deep center.
An Urtuzuastegui home run in the sixth would put the Captains back on top for half an inning, but the AirHogs scored five times in the sixth including back-to-back homers by Nicolas and Porter. Zane Chavez would add to the scoring with a two-run double. Shreveport-Bossier chipped away at the lead with one in the seventh on a Bryan Frichter RBI single. They tied it with three runs in the eighth thanks to three Grand Prairie errors.
Captains reliever Justin Young kept the AirHogs from scoring in the eighth, striking out Danny Figueroa with two on and two outs. However, his lead off walk in the bottom of the ninth would lead to the Grand Prairie victory. Following a strike out of David Thomas, the Captains elected to intentionally walk the next two hitters to load the bases. The next hitter, Alonso would lift the fateful fly to left that would win it for the Hogs.
Young (0-2) was charged with the loss while Grand Prairie closer Jon Hunton (1-0) picked up his first win, pitching 1.2 innings and holding the Captains scoreless. The loss and the onslaught of offense (25 runs scored, 29 hits combined) overshadowed a great night at the plate for Urtuzuastegui who went three-for-four with four runs scored, including his first long ball of the year.
Game two takes place at QuikTrip Park Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when Captains hurler Aaron Cunningham takes on Grand Prairie's John Brownell.
