Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts won 4-2 over the Lincoln Saltdogs in 10 innings at Haymarket Park on Friday night.
Jorge Cortes hit a two-out, two-run home run to deep right-center field in the top of the 10th inning to give Wichita a 4-2 lead. Thomas Fitzgerald reached second base on an error by third baseman Brandon Jones to lead off the inning. Saltdogs' reliever Paul Koss nearly escaped the jam by retiring Josh Horn and Ryan Patterson back-to-back before allowing the home run to Cortes.
In the last of the 10th, Josh Dew retired the side in order on just 10 pitches to earn his league-leading sixth save of the year.
The 10th-inning rally followed clutch relief pitching by Cephas Howard in the bottom of the ninth. Howard came on with the bases loaded and one out with the game still tied 2-2, and went on to retire Jon Nelson and Maikel Jova, Lincoln's number four and five hitters respectively, to end Lincoln's rally.
Wichita scratched out an unearned run in the top of the second against Lincoln starter Thomas Palica to take a 1-0 lead, and added another in the sixth on a solo home run to left by Patterson.
Lincoln got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Jova hit a sacrifice fly to center, and then tied the game on a seventh-inning RBI double by Curt Smith.
Junior Guerra turned in another strong start, allowing two earned runs in 6.1 IP with six strikeouts in a no-decision.
Jared Simon contributed 2.0 scoreless relief innings, and struck out the side in order in the eighth.
Palica also took a no-decision, allowing two runs, one earned, in six innings.
The Wingnuts are now 3-1 in extra innings this season, including a 2-1 mark on the road.
The Wingnuts and Saltdogs play game two of their series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Ryan Hinson takes on Lincoln right-hander Tim Brown. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
