Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Former Winterhawks assistant coach Karl Taylor secured his first National Hockey League win while serving as the head coach of the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.

Taylor, along with five others from the Predators' AHL affiliate in Milwaukee, was called-up in advance of Thursday's game against Colorado due to ten Nashville players and coaches landing on the NHL's COVID-19 protocol list. Nashville won their sixth straight game, beating Colorado 5-2.

The North Bay, Ont. native was an assistant coach of the Winterhawks during the 2013-14 season and helped Portland win the U.S. Division Championship with a 54-13-2-3 record. In the playoffs, Taylor and the Winterhawks advanced to the WHL Finals for the fourth consecutive season, but ultimately lost in game seven to the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Following his time in the Rose City, Taylor held coaching positions with the Texas Stars and Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. He is currently in his third season serving as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals and was named the 2019-20 AHL Coach of the Year.

"The coaching staff here has done a wonderful job with a great group of guys. You can just tell the energy and how they care about each other, how they didn't allow anything that occurred today [to phase them]."
