December 17, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats picked up two massive points on Friday night against the rival Moose Jaw Warriors, edging them 6-5 in regulation.
It was an entertaining game from start to finish, with the Pats jumping out to a 4-1 lead after just one period. Regina extended their advantage to 5-1 early in the second, but the Warriors clawed back into it thanks to some special teams play, cutting the deficit to 5-4 after 40 minutes.
Tanner Howe's late third period goal ended up being the difference-maker, as he buried one with 3:04 to go off a pass from Logan Nijhoff.
Four different Pats recorded multi-point games: Howe (2G, 1A), Cole Dubinsky (1G, 1A), Nijhoff (1G, 1A) and Borya Valis (2A). Cole Carrier and Layton Feist also found the back of the net on Friday, while Drew Sim picked up his first win of the year thanks to a 32-save performance.
The Warriors got goals from five different players: Cade Hayes, Brayden Yager, Nathan Pilling, Atley Calvert and Jagger Firkus.
The Pats wrap up their first half schedule on Saturday night in the back half of their home-and-home with the Warriors at 7 p.m.
THE GOALS
1st Period
REG 1-0 at 1:03 - Tanner Howe (10), assisted by Borya Valis (10) and Luke Bateman (5) // Bateman chipped the puck off the glass and out following a defensive zone face-off, which Valis got to first in the neutral zone. Valis took the puck wide and drove the net, leaving a rebound sitting there for Howe.
REG 2-0 at 9:05 - Cole Dubinsky (9), unassisted (SHG) // Dubinsky stole the puck from Mateychuk in the neutral zone and went in on a shorthanded breakaway, finishing with purpose on the forehand.
REG 3-0 at 14:30 - Cole Carrier (11), assisted by Cole Dubinsky (9) and Jakob Brook (2) // Brook's low shot from the outside was partially blocked by Mateychuk, but it bounced off his stick and went right to Carrier in the middle, who quickly fired and beat Unger for his 11th of the season.
REG 4-0 at 16:19 - Logan Nijhoff (10), assisted by Tanner Howe (9) and Borya Valis (11) // Howe fed a cross-ice pass perfectly for Nijhoff, who one-timed it home to hit double digits in goals for the third straight season.
MJ 1-4 at 19:45 - Cade Hayes (5), assisted by Atley Calvert and Maximus Wanner // Hayes knocked the puck in from the crease area after Calvert's low shot was flubbed but still went towards the goal.
2nd Period
REG 5-1 at 3:32 - Layton Feist (2), assisted by Tom Cadieux (6) and Alex Geci (2) (PPG) // Feist blasted a rocket from the top of the right circle on the power play, that rang off the post and in.
MJ 2-4 at 5:29 - Brayden Yager (13), unassisted // Yager came down the right wing on a 2-on-1 rush and ripped a short-side shot past the glove of Sim.
MJ 3-4 at 8:03 - Nathan Pilling (1), assisted by Maximus Wanner and Cole Jordan (PPG) // Wanner's shot from the top of the right circle was deflected in perfectly by Pilling, hitting the inside of the post and going in.
MJ 4-5 at 17:52 - Atley Calvert (4), assisted by Jagger Firkus and Denton Mateychuk (PPG) // Firkus made a great heads-play to find Calvert at the side of the goal for a tap-in on the power play.
3rd Period
REG 6-4 at 16:56 - Tanner Howe (11), assisted by Logan Nijhoff // Nijhoff forced a turnover behind the Moose Jaw goal and centred a pass for Howe, who made no mistake.
MJ 5-6 at 17:39 - Jagger Firkus (14), assisted by Atley Calvert and Denton Mateychuk // Firkus located the puck after a mini-scramble at the side of the goal and lifted it past Sim to make it a one-goal game.
