Former First Round Draft Pick Assigned to Wings; Valk Back to Utica
April 8, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - Centerman Zack Phillips has been re-assigned by the St. Louis Blues from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League to the Kalamazoo Wings, the team announced Friday, ahead of their contest with the Toledo Walleye.
Phillips, 23, joins Kalamazoo after spending a majority of the season with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. In 38 games with Providence, Phillps accumulated five goals and nine assists. The fourth year pro had his rights traded from the Boston Bruins organization to the St. Louis Blues organization in March, resulting in Phillips heading to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, where he appeared in nine games.
A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, the 6-foot-1 centerman was a first round (pick #28) draft selection of the Minnesota Wild. Phillips has racked up 265 games of professional experience, with all but five being played in the American Hockey League. Phillips appeared in five games with the Atlanta Gladiators of the ECHL earlier in the season.
Prior to turning pro, Phillips appeared in 192 games with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he racked up 84 goals and 135 assists for 219 career points at the junior level. Phillips was a member of the Sea Dogs' 2011 and 2012 QMJHL championship teams, as well as their 2011 Memorial Cup winning squad.
Phillips will join the Wings for their Friday contest with Toledo, and the newest addition will wear number 4.
In a separate transaction, Curtis Valk has been recalled by the Utica Comets of the American hockey league.
The Kalamazoo Wings head to Toledo to face the Walleye for an 8:15 p.m. contest from the Huntington Center tonight. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the Wings currently sit in the seventh playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
Kalamazoo return home to Wings Event Center on Saturday, April 9 to host Toledo for Fan Appreciation night. The celebration features dozens of giveaways and prizes, as well as a copy of the 2015-16 team poster for the first 1,500 fans through the doors.
