Five-Run 4th Inning Enough in 5-0 Win for Richmond
August 5, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Richmond, Virginia- One inning was all the Richmond Flying Squirrels need to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 5-0 on Friday night. After three hitless innings, the Flying Squirrels exploded for five runs and five hits against Chris Balcom-Miller (2-5) in the fourth inning. Daryl Maday (3-10) and company took care of the rest as Richmond took the first of a three-game series. Portland's league-leading offense was limited to just three hits and five baserunners for the entire game.
Balcom-Miller retired nine of the first ten batters he faced. Then, Charlie Culberson led off the fourth inning with Richmond's first base hit. After a strikeout, Culberson stole second base and scored on a double by Chris Dominguez. Wes Hodges grounded out, but Johnny Monell made it 2-0 with another double to score Dominguez.
The two-out rally continued as Juan Perez walked. Wendell Fairley singled in Monell. Then, Fairley and Perez both moved into scoring position for Skyler Stromsmoe. The number nine hitter delivered with a blooper to score both runners and up the lead to 5-0. Over the rest of his outing, Balcom-Miller allowed only four baserunners, but his nightmare fourth was enough.
Maday shut down the potent Sea Dogs offense over six and two-thirds innings to get the win. The closest he came to giving up a run came in the first inning. Jon Hee singled in the inning and Matt Spring walked with two outs to put runners on first and second. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Maday got Mitch Dening to fly out and end the frame.
The righty retired 17 of 18 batters at one point during his outing. Seven and two-thirds is the longest Maday has gone into any game this season. Edwin Quirarte pitched the final two and one-third innings to close out the game. Miguel Gonzalez pitched two and two-thirds perfect innings in relief of Balcom-Miller. It was the first time Portland had been shut out since May 31st. Richmond can clinch the season series with a win tomorrow night.
The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels play the second of their three-game series tomorrow evening. After Sunday's finale, Portland returns to Hadlock Field for the start of a six-game homestand against the Akron Aeros and Erie SeaWolves. The ZOOperstars will be in town for their second and final visit to Portland this year on August 9th. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
