Chiang Named July Player of the Month

Portland, ME The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of July. This marks the second consecutive month that Chiang has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month as he also won the award in the month of June. In 26 games during the month of July Chih-Hsien batted .430 (43-for-100) with 16 doubles, five home runs, 27 runs scored, 25 RBI, seven walks, three stolen bases and a .740 slugging percentage. The 23-year old had at least one hit in 23 of the 26 games he played in during the month and had multiple hits in 16 of those games. He finished the month with a 16-game hitting streak during which he hit .433 with eight doubles, four homers, 17 runs scored and 14 RBI. Chiang ended the month going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in an 8-5 win over Altoona on July 31st. That turned out to be his final game as a member of the Sea Dogs as later that day Chih-Hsien was traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of a three-team trade that sent Erik Bedard to the Boston Red Sox.

The 6'2", 170 lb. slugger finished first among the Eastern League monthly leaders in batting average (.430), runs scored (27), hits (43), doubles (16), extra-base hits (21), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.740) and OPS (1.240), tied for second in total bases (74) and tied for fifth in RBI (25). In addition to his performance with the Sea Dogs during the month he was also a part of the World Team at the MLB Futures Game in Arizona and was a member of the Eastern Division roster for the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game in New Hampshire. The Taitung, Taiwan native went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the Futures Game and was 0-for-1 in the Eastern League All-Star Game.

Chih-Hsien, who currently leads the league in batting average (.340), RBI (76), doubles (37), extra-base hits (59), slugging percentage (.648) and OPS (1.050), was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on October 20, 2005.

Harrisburg Senators first baseman Tyler Moore also received strong consideration for the award after batting .330 (37-for-112) with eight doubles, 10 home runs, 28 RBI, 18 runs scored and one stolen base in 30 games during the month.
