TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Portland Sea Dogs will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The New Hampshire Fisher Cats completed a three-game series sweep of the Flying Squirrels while handing Eric Surkamp his first loss since June 3rd with a 4-2 win on Thursday night in front of 7,326 fans at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in the series opener for the Flying Squirrels...Making his 18th start of the season and his first since 7/22 against Harrisburg...Suffered the loss in his last outing 7/30 at Trenton...Allowed five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings...Struck out one batter and walked two...Entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning...Allowed two of the three runners he inherited to score...Gave up five runs and four hits including a three-run homer from Addison Maruszak in the bottom of the third inning...Allowed the first batter he faced to reach in two of his three innings on the mound (scored once)...Recorded three flyouts/popouts and three groundouts...Threw 46 pitches, 27 strikes...Threw 34 pitches in the bottom of the third inning...Threw first-pitch strikes to eight of the 14 batters he faced...Has not earned a winning decision since 6/5 against Reading...Is 0-6 over his last 11 outings, seven starts, with a 6.36 ERA (33ER/46.2 IP) and opponents are batting .297 (55-for-185) against him over that span with 10 home runs...Was placed on the DL 5/2 due to pneumonia...Activated from the Disabled List 5/9...Spent the majority of the 2010 season with Richmond... LOSING GROUND: The Flying Squirrels are trying to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season with a win tonight in the series-opener with the Portland Sea Dogs...The club has dropped four straight twice this season, most recently 5/29-6/1...Richmond's current three-game losing streak is its longest since dropping three straight 7/16-7/18...Prior to their current skid, the Flying Squirrels had won 12 of their previous 15 games.
SWEPT AWAY: The Flying Squirrels were swept in a three-game series for the third time this season after dropping the series-finale with New Hampshire last night 4-2...It was the first time Richmond had been swept since losing all three games at Bowie 4/29-5/1...The club was also swept by the Trenton Thunder 4/18-4/20 at Waterfront Park...It was the first time this season that the Flying Squirrels have been swept at The Diamond and the team's current three-game losing streak at home is its longest of the season...Previously, Richmond had lost consecutive games at home just one other time this season: 6/18-6/19 against Bowie...The Flying Squirrels are now 11-3-3 in home series in 2011.
HOME AND AWAY: The Flying Squirrels recently completed a stretch where they played 14 of 20 games on the road...The team went 13-7 over that span including an 8-6 mark on the road...Overall, the club is 23-30 on the road, and is batting .224 and averaging 3.58 runs per game (190R/53G) in 53 road contests...The club is 37-21 overall at home - the best home record in the league - and is batting .260 in 58 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.52 runs per game at home (262R/58G).
SAN FRANCISCO: Outfielder Francisco Peguero went 1-for-4 last night with a double...The 23-year-old has hits in seven straight games, his fifth hit streak of five games or more since joining the Flying Squirrels from Advanced-A San Jose 6/23...He is 10-for-31 (.323) over his last seven games with a double, three triples, three RBIs, and three runs scored...His five triples overall this season are second-most on the team trailing Juan Perez who is tied for the Eastern League lead with eight triples.
WILD, WILD WES: First baseman Wes Hodges hit his first home run at The Diamond last night and his seventh home run overall this since joining the Flying Squirrels 6/15...The 26-year-old is hitting .235 (19-for-81) with seven doubles, a triple, one home run and 12 RBIs in 25 games at The Diamond...In 21 games on the road, he is batting .400 (34-for-85) with six doubles, six homers and 14 RBIs...The former Cleveland Indians farmhand hit .365 (38-for-104) in 29 games in July with six doubles, six home runs, and 16 RBIs...He has hits in nine of his last 10 contests and is batting .462 (18-for-39) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs, and five runs scored over that span.
THE JOLLY ROGER: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 last night with a pair of doubles...The 24-year-old has hits in five straight games, his team-leading seventh hit streak of five games or more this season...He is hitting The Texas-native also leads the team with 40 extra-base hits including 22 doubles, four triples, and a single-season franchise record 14 home runs...His 58 RBIs are also tops on the club and he is 11 RBIs shy of matching Thomas Neal's single-season franchise record of 69...Kieschnick is currently tied for second in the Eastern League in games played (109) and run scored (65).
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 3.32 ERA through 111 games and has allowed a league-low 425 runs...Richmond's pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in 43 of its 111 games (39%)...Starting pitching has allowed three runs or less in 80 of the team's 111 games (72%) and the club is 54-26 in those contests.
