RICHMOND, VA - Right-hander Daryl Maday kept the Portland Sea Dogs (47-65) off balance for 6 2/3 innings as the Richmond Flying Squirrels (61-51) took the opener of a three-game series, 5-0, in front of 7,205 at The Diamond on Friday night. The win snaps a three-game slide for Richmond and marks their eighth staff shutout of the season.

Maday traded scoreless innings with Portland right-hander Chris Balcom-Miller through the third. Richmond broke on top in the fourth, as Charlie Culberson led off with an infield-single. Culberson swiped second base and a batter later, Chris Dominguez sliced an RBI double up the right-field line for a 1-0 lead. With two down in the inning, Johnny Monell doubled just inside the third-base line, bringing home Dominguez for a 2-0 edge. Balcom-Miller then walked Juan Perez before Wendell Fairley singled home Monell. A wild-pitch moved the runners up, and Skyler Stromsmoe capped the inning with a jam-shot two-run single flared into left-center field.

Maday (3-10) never relented, at one point in the ballgame retiring 17-of-18 batters that he faced. Ultimately, he earned his first victory since June 5th over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed just three hits - all singles - walked one and struck out four.

Bascom-Miller (2-5) wouldn't allow Richmond anything else, but the damage was done as he took the loss over 5 2/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four.

Both offenses sputtered following the departure of the starters. Richmond right-hander Edwin Quirarte retired all seven batters he faced over 2 1/3 perfect innings of relief. Portland right-hander Miguel Gonzalez did him one better, setting aside all eight Squirrels that he encountered.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Saturday night at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (4-8, 4.13) will make the start for the Squirrels. The Sea Dogs have yet to announce their starting pitcher for game two. For tickets or more information, log on to SquirrelsBaseball.com.
