Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, MD - The Baysox fell behind New Hampshire early and never caught up as they lost 11-3 at home Friday night. With the loss, the Baysox fall to 61-51 on the season and have lost three games in a row.
The first two innings of the game were a whirlwind as the two teams combined to score eight runs and commit three errors leading to three unearned runs being scored. The Baysox had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the second inning, but consecutive batters struck out to end one of the team's best scoring chances of the game.
"Our last real opportunity to score was when you had runners on with one out and we can't put the ball in play," said Manager Gary Kendall. "It was a close game at that point, 5-3 and you have a feeling that we can get back into it, but once we didn't score there, they kept swinging the bats."
The Fisher Cats took an early lead in the top of the first inning against right-handed starting pitcher Bobby Bundy. On the second pitch of the game, Anthony Gose hit his 11th home run of the season to right-center field to start the scoring. Later in the inning, with no outs and runners at first and third, Travis d'Arnaud and Moises Sierra hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Baysox got one run back against New Hampshire starter Henderson Alvarez. The Baysox loaded the bases with no one out and first baseman Joe Mahoney then hit into a double play that resulted in a run for the Baysox to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Fishers Cats added to the lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Gose walked and stole second base before Adeiny Hechavarria hit a single to center field that scored Gose. On the play, the ball got under the glove of Baysox center fielder Xavier Avery and rolled all the way to the wall allowing Hechavarria to come all the way around to score on the three-base error, giving the Fisher Cats a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Baysox cut into the lead again. Designated hitter Brandon Waring led off with a single up the middle and scored on a triple down the left field line by shortstop Pedro Florimon. Catcher Steve Lerud followed with an RBI single to left field that made the score 5-3.
Facing right-handed reliever Armando Gabino, d'Arnaud added to the lead in the fourth inning with a two out RBI double to center field that extended the lead to 6-3.
The Fisher Cats extended the lead again in the top of the sixth inning. With two on and no one out, Hechavarria hit a two-run triple to center field. He then scored when Danny Perales reached on an error by Mahoney to make the score 9-3.
In the ninth inning, the Fisher Cats scored two more runs against right-handed reliever Raul Rivero. Craig Stansberry hit an RBI double to left field and Joe Bowen scored on a passed ball by Joel Polanco to give New Hampshire an 11-3 lead.
Making his Double-A debut, Bundy lasted just two innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out three in the loss.
"He made a mistake to the very first hitter of the game, but outside of that they had some well-placed base hits and he made some mistakes out over the plate," said Pitching Coach Kennie Steenstra. "But, I liked his stuff and I liked the way he kept going after people and I think we'll see a lot better out of him his next time out."
With the starting pitcher leaving the game so early, it fell on the Baysox bullpen to get the team through the game. Gabino pitched three innings in relief of Bundy and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three. Rivero fell one out short of tying his season-high as he pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola recorded the final out of the ninth inning for the Baysox.
"The job that Gabino and Rivero did to pick some innings up for us was nice," Kendall said. "I really respect what those guys did because to cover seven innings of a ballgame is tough."
The Baysox are home through Sunday, August 7 for a home stand that includes Girl's Baseball Night Saturday, August 6 and the Un-Birthday Big Birthday Bash Sunday August 7.
