Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has often said that if his team gets good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting, it will win a lot of baseball games.

Friday night in Sioux Falls, the Goldeyes didn't get much of any of that.

Sioux Falls Pheasants catcher Henry Contreras had two hits and drove in four runs, as he led the home side to an 8-3 win over the Goldeyes at Sioux Falls Stadium. Although Jon Weber hit a two-run homer and Lou Ott went three-for-three and is now hitting .328 this season, the Goldeyes just couldn't get enough hits when they needed them and lost for the first time since last Sunday.

Goldeyes starter Mike Williams gave up a run in the first, one more in the second, four in the third and singles in the fourth and fifth as the Pheasants scored early and often and put a halt to the Goldeyes three-game winning streak. Sioux Falls finished with eight runs on 11 hits and dropped the Goldeyes to 41-24 on the season.

However, Winnipeg remained in first place in the American Association's North Division, three games up on the second-place St. Paul Saints who lost 10-2 at home to Sioux City on Friday night.

The Goldeyes scored all of their runs in the second inning. Trailing 1-0 heading into the second, clean-up hitter Brian Myrow singled and then Weber hit his ninth home run of the season. Before the inning ended, Justin Bass doubled and came home on a single by Ott.

However, despite loading the bases in the third and threatening three more times, the Goldeyes just couldn't get a big hit when they needed it. Although Winnipeg finished with 11 hits - Wes Long, Myrow and Ott all had multi-hit games -- they were only able to cobble together a few runs in the third. The Fish also made one error on the night and that led to the Pheasants' only run in the second inning.

Sioux Falls starter Brandon Rapoza (3-9, 5.84 ERA) got the win for Sioux Falls while Williams (2-3, 6.46 ERA) suffered the loss for Winnipeg. Williams pitched eight complete innings, allowing all eight runs on 11 hits. He walked three and struck out five. Rapoza, meanwhile, was the Sioux Falls starter last Saturday night in Winnipeg when the Goldeyes bombed the Pheasants 19-5.

The second game of this three-game series goes Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The game can be heard live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290.
