Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FT. WORTH, TX - Rookie infielder John Johnson went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in his first professional game as the Captains won their second straight, beating the Ft. Worth Cats 3-2 at LaGrave Field Friday night.

With two outs and the bases empty, Johnson picked up his second base hit of the game off Cats starter Dwayne Pollok (3-4). Johnson stole second on a close play and slid home safely with the go-ahead run on Mike Provencher's base hit to left. Pollok was the hard-luck loser, going 7.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out a season-high 11.

Jameson Maj (1-3) got his first win of the year, going 1.2 innings scoreless. Mark Haynes pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the year and second in his last two appearances.

Ft. Worth scored first when Ryan Patterson went deep to left in the first inning off Captains starter Ryan DiPietro to make it 1-0 Cats. The home run was Patterson's 12th of the year and first since being traded to Ft. Worth from Wichita. Shreveport-Bossier would tie the game in the third. Alex Cowart led off the inning with a double, moved to third on Johnson's single, and scored on a Provencher sacrifice fly. The inning ended when Johnson was thrown out by Ft. Worth right fielder Marcos Rodriguez trying to advance on the sac fly.

The Cats regained the lead in the third. Patterson reached base on Provencher's fielding error and reached second on a Kelley Gulledge walk. With two out, he scored on a single by first baseman Trent Lockwood. However, DiPietro would not allow another run, striking out a season-high nine batters and allowing just two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.

Shreveport-Bossier tied it up again in the fifth. Andres Rodriguez led off the inning with a double, took third on a Brian Peterson sacrifice bunt and scored on Cowart's ground out to short.

After the Captains took the lead in the eighth, Ft. Worth left two on in the eighth against Maj, who allowed two two-out singles but got center fielder Brian Fryer to fly out to end the inning. In the ninth, Haynes gave up a leadoff single to Rodriguez who then moved to second on a sac bunt by shortstop Cory Morales. However, Haynes would then get pinch hitter Will Calhoun to ground to third. He then struck out pinch hitter Jeremy Sauceda to end the game.

Shreveport-Bossier improves to 30-35 with the win. Grand Prairie and St. Paul both lost, moving the Captains up to 12.5 games behind in the division and eight back in the Wild Card race. The Captains are back in sole possession of second place in the South Division.

Provencher went 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the win. Cowart was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. For the Cats, Lockwood was 2-for-4 with one run batted in. Rodriguez also went 2-for-4. Bryan Sabatella had a bunt single in the top of the ninth, extending his hitting streak to five games.

Shreveport-Bossier goes for its third straight win Saturday night when Josh Strawn (0-0, 3.00) takes the mound against Ft. Worth's Wade Mackey (5-4, 4.87). First pitch is at 7:05.
