Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(MANCHESTER, NH) - The Fightin Phils split a pair with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Saturday night, blanking the Cats 2-0 in game one before suffering a 4-2 loss in the nightcap at Delta Dental Stadium.
A big spot came early in game one when the Fisher Cats filled the bases in the bottom of the second with just one out. David Parkinson induced a key strikeout of Chad Spanberger for the second out, and got Logan Warmoth to fly to center to end the threat.
Reading (23-16) (62-44) took its first lead of the series in the top of the third.
Jose Antequera opened the frame with a single down the first base line. He moved to second on a balk, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Luke Williams brought him home, scorching a double to left for his fifth two-base hit of the series, putting Reading up 1-0.
With the infield in, Alec Bohm followed with a jam-shot liner into left-center to score Williams and make it 2-0.
Parkinson (7-7) dealt six shutout innings in the start, limiting New Hampshire (15-23) (46-59) to only four hits and a walk. The lefty struck out four in his longest outing since June 22.
Addison Russ finished it off, working around a leadoff bloop single by Kevin Smith to hurl a scoreless bottom of the seventh for his 16th save.
New Hampshire jumped ahead in the first inning of game two, racing out to a 3-0 lead.
Forrest Wall greeted Adonis Medina (6-5) with a single, and both Warmoth and Nash Knight were hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Vinny Capra followed with a two-run double to left, and Brock Lundquist hit a pop up into shallow left-center that dropped behind the shortstop Arquimedes Gamboa to score Knight and put the Fisher Cats up 3-0.
Reading got one back in the top of the third against William Ouellette, a right-hander making his first career start. Mickey Moniak got ahold of a 1-1 offering a flung it over the wall in right for his sixth home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
New Hampshire got that run back in the bottom of the third, when Alberto Mineo ripped a two-out RBI double to right-center to put the Fisher Cats up 4-1.
Darick Hall opened the fourth with a deep drive to the left field corner that just eluded the left fielder Lundquist for a triple. Josh Stephen brought him in with a grounder to short to again cut the Fisher Cats lead down to two.
Vinny Nittoli (1-2) earned the win in relief, retiring all six batters he faced.
The Fightins and Fisher Cats wrap up the five-game series on Sunday with first pitch at 1:35 p.m. Coverage begins at 1 p.m. on 610 ESPN and the Fightins radio network.
