Falcons Sign Four

October 2, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons have signed four players from last year' s club that came within one game of repeating as the West Coast Hockey League's Taylor Cup Champions, bringing to eight the total number currently under contract for the upcoming 2003-04 season. Left winger Scott Borders, goaltender Terry Friesen, right winger Jordan Landry and defenseman Drew Schoneck all return to the Falcons for the team's inaugural season in both the ECHL and the Save Mart Center at Fresno State.

Borders begins his second full season with Fresno following a campaign last year that saw him finish second in rookie scoring with 38 points (19g-19a) and earn WCHL All-Rookie honors. His 19 goals were the fourth highest total on the team last year and included two of the team's eight hat tricks.

Friesen is back for his fourth season in goal for the Falcons. Originally a third round draft choice (55th overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, he played every minute in goal for the team during the playoffs on the way to the Taylor Cup Championship in 2001-02. Friesen holds team records for most career shutouts (5), highest career save percentage (89.4%) and lowest career goals against average (3.11).

Landry returns for his second year in a Falcons uniform after an impressive rookie campaign during which he racked up 25 points (8g-17a) to go along with 182 penalty minutes.

Like Borders, Schoneck will be playing his second full season with the Falcons after joining them late in the regular season of 2001-02. A former head coach of the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets, Schoneck was the club's second leading scorer among defensemen last season as he posted career-best numbers with nine goals, 26 assists and 35 points.

The Falcons open training camp with their first on-ice session on Oct. 6 at Gateway Ice Center in preparation for the season opener on Oct. 17 in Bakersfield against the Condors. The club plays its inaugural home opener in the Save Mart Center at Fresno State on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. also against the Condors following an 11-game road trip to open the campaign.

Season tickets to see the Falcons play at the Save Mart Center in 2003-04 are now on sale with mini-packs beginning as low as $48. Call the Falcons at 485-PUCK (7825) or visit www.fresnofalcons.com for more information.
