Generals Sign Turner and Irwin

October 2, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release

Greensboro, NC –The Greensboro Generals have announced the first two signings to their 2003-04 roster. In a season where the Generals search to improve on a franchise record 42 wins, Head Coach/General Manager Rick Adduono has signed right wing Joel Irwin and center Mark Turner, giving Generals fans a pair of familiar faces on the ice.

Turner brings veteran leadership to the Generals lineup, and will spend a second season with the Generals, and 12th in professional hockey. After a 2002-03 campaign where he scored 20 goals, 43 assists, which resulted in 63 points, Turner had defined his role in Adduono's offense. Rising to the occasion in the 2003 playoffs, Turner's three goals were tied Bryan Richardson for second most on the roster. He also added four assists to his performance.

"Turner brings a veteran leadership to our team and to the ECHL that is unmatched," said Adduono. "He will be looked upon to provide leadership in every category."

After playing hockey in Europe last season, Irwin returns to the Generals organization where he played from 1999 until the 2001 season. In his two seasons in Greensboro, he appeared in 137 games, scoring 45 goals, recording 64 assists, and totaled 109 points. Irwin spent the 2001-02 season with Pee Dee continuing to improve his game with the Pride, appearing in 70 games where he scored 30 goals, registered 27 assists, and was responsible for 57 points.

"I am as excited to have Joel back in Greensboro, probably as Joel is to return," said Adduono. "He is a fan favorite and put up big numbers in Greensboro as rookie three seasons ago. He will bring energy every shift, and more importantly he can play all three forward positions." The Generals will play in the expanded ECHL's Eastern Conference in the newly aligned Southern Division along with Augusta, Charlotte, Columbia, Florence, Florida, Greenville, Gwinnett, Roanoke and South Carolina. Greensboro will open the year with back-to-back home games. The home opener is against the South Carolina Stingrays on October 17th at 7:30 p.m. Next up is the newly formed Texas Wildcatters who visit the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time on October 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
