Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers were defeated by the Springfield Falcons Saturday, falling by a score of 6-3. Andrew Clark, Anders Lee and Matt Donovan were the Sound Tigers goal scorers, but three goals for the Falcons in both the second and third periods were the difference in the contest. With the loss, the Sound Tigers fall to 12-16-1-3 on the season.
Clark's goal was the only one of the first period and came at the 14:53 mark. With a delayed penalty upcoming on the Falcons, Anders Nilsson headed to the bench for the extra attacker. The Sound Tigers took advantage with extended possession in the Falcons zone as Dallas Jackson sent the puck cross-ice to Clark. Clark fired a one-timer from the right circle past Falcons goaltender Jeremy Smith to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Jake Hansen got the Falcons on the board early in the second as Nilsson stopped a shot from Jonathan Marchessault but was unable to hang on to the rebound. The puck trickled into the crease and Hansen crashed the net to poke home the rebound and the score. Marchessault scored his first of two goals later in the period with a power-play goal, while Ryan Craig scored just 34 seconds after Marchessault to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead after two.
In the third period, Marchessault struck again as he stickhandled his way through the Sound Tigers zone before snapping a shot from the right circle that beat Nilsson. Less than a minute later, however, Lee took a beautiful backdoor pass from Donovan and tapped it past Smith to cut the Falcons lead to two.
The Sound Tigers still trailed with 5:25 left to play when Marchessault was assessed a major penalty for boarding. Marc Cantin was given a roughing penalty, as well, so the teams played four-on-four for two minutes before a three-minute Sound Tigers power play. Springfield took advantage of the open ice in the four-on-four however and scored two goals in 26 seconds to pad its lead. Patrick McNeill's shot from the point beat Nilsson at 15:40 before Blake Parlett's wrister from the right circle went in, as well.
Springfield took another penalty late in the third which gave the Sound Tigers a 5-on-3 advantage. Donovan scored his third goal of the season with a blast from the left point, but the deficit was too much for the Sound Tigers to overcome.
The Sound Tigers return home Sunday afternoon for a 3 p.m. game against the Albany Devils.
