Admirals Win Third Straight with 6-3 Win at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY - Emerson Etem scored twice, while Igor Bobkov made 37 saves to lead the Norfolk Admirals to a 6-3 victory over the Syracuse Crunch Saturday evening at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena. Norfolk(16-11-1-4) has now won three straight contests and pulls within two points of first place Binghamton in the East Division.

The Crunch received a power play opportunity early in the game, but it was Norfolk that took advantage. Dave Steckel blocked a shot and steered a pass out of his own end to Emerson Etem who took off on a shorthanded breakaway chance. Etem lifted a backhanded shot past Syracuse goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis to put Norfolk on top 1-0 at 5:26.

A little more than a minute later, Norfolk struck again while killing off the same penalty for a second shorthanded marker. Jesse Blacker grabbed a hold of the puck and directed a pass out of the zone to Max Friberg. Friberg broke into the zone on the left wing side and fired a shot that hit off the post and deflected into the net to extend the Norfolk lead to 2-0.

The goal marked the second time in Admirals AHL history that the team scored two shorthanded goals while killing off the same penalty.

The Admirals added to their lead on a goal by Rickard Rakell just 42 seconds into the middle frame. Rakell with some flashy moves was able to beat Gudlevskis to put the game at a 3-0 tally.

Moments later, Stefan Warg fired a shot that deflected off a Syracuse stick in front. The rebound bounced to the stick of Chris Wagner who batted the puck into the net to propel the Admirals to a 4-0 advantage. The goal chased Gudlevskis from the game, and Cedric Desjardins entered play in relief.

Down but not out, Syracuse chipped away at the Norfolk lead. Former Admiral Mike Angelidis put the Crunch on the board at 10:30 of the second period with a power play goal. The puck bounced around amidst a scramble in front, and Angelidis picked up the loose rubber and swept it into the net past a sliding Igor Bobkov.

Evan Rankin buried a feed from Dana Tyrell with two minutes remaining in the second period to cut the Syracuse deficit in half after 40 minutes played.

Two minutes into the third, Drew Olson's wrist shot from the slot beat Bobkov to pull the Crunch within one by a 4-3 count.

Norfolk silenced the Syracuse comeback bid at 9:17 of the period, when Etem recorded his second of the night. Etem found a bouncing puck on the left side of the crease and delivered a shot that hit off the stick of Desjardins which sent the puck up in the air. The puck clipped over Desjardins' shoulder and into the net for the goal putting the Admirals back on top by two.

Norfolk sealed the game in the closing minutes when Max Sauve picked up the rebound from a Steven Whitney shot and slid the puck behind Desjardins to lift the score to a decisive 6-3 mark.

Igor Bobkov earned the win stopping 37 of 38 shots, while Gudlevskis takes loss allowing four goals on 12 shots. Desjardins stopped 16 of 18 shots in a relief effort.
