Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - Hershey goaltender David Leggio made 30 saves through overtime and stopped 4-of-5 in the shootout to lead the Bears to a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at GIANT Center.
After a scoreless first period, the Penguins went ahead at 7:27 after defenseman Barry Goers intercepted an outlet pass at center ice. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman fed the puck to the far wing for Denver Manderson, who skated into the Hershey zone and fired a low wrist shot on net. Leggio made the skate save, but former Bear Mike Carman crashed the net to bang home the rebound and notch his third goal of the season.
The Bears pulled even five minutes later when Ryan Stoa backhanded a pass from the Penguins goal line that David Kolomatis stepped into at the right circle and blasted past Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie Eric Hartzell.
The game remained tied at one through the rest of regulation and the overtime period before heading to the shootout. Casey Wellman and Ryan Potulny each converted in the shootout to give the Bears 2-0 lead after three rounds.
Tom Kostopoulos kept the Penguins alive in the top half of the fourth frame, picking the corner over Leggio's shoulder with a wrist shot from left hash. Hartzell followed that with a save on Nicolas Deschamps' potential game-clincher, but Leggio denied Anton Zlobin in round five to allow Hershey to skate away with the win.
In net for his first shootout as a pro, Hartzell was 2-for-4 against Hershey skaters, while also stopping 32-of-33 through overtime.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins close out 2013 with a New Year's Eve match-up against the Syracuse Crunch at 5:05 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Tune into the live action on the Sports Hub 102 or AHL Live.
