December 28, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Albany, NY - Three straight goals for the Devils proved to be too much for the Pirates as they fell 4-1 in Albany. Andy Miele had the lone Pirates goal, tying Ryan Mulhern and Martin Gendron for 15th all-time in Pirates history in points with 135.
After a scoreless first half of the game, the Devils scored three times in quick succession. Joe Whitney started the scoring at the 9:35 mark of the second to give the Devils the 1-0 lead. Seth Helgeson then tallied his first professional goal with 8:50 left in the second to extend the Devil's lead, and Mike Sislo scored to again extend the lead just 3 minutes later. The Pirates leading scorer would help close the deficit, as Andy Miele tallied his 13th goal of the year with 4:14 left in the second to bring the score within two. Miele's goal was assisted by Chris Brown and Brandon McMillan, and gives him 28 points on the year. Miele's goal also gives him 135 career points, tying him for 15th in Pirates history with Hall of Famers Ryan Mulhern and Martin Gendron.
In the third, the Pirates ratcheted up the pressure, sending a season high 17 shots at Keith Kinkaid's net, but to no avail. Rod Pelley sealed the game with an empty net goal with under 10 seconds left in the game, giving Albany the 4-1 win.
The Pirates penalty kill was stellar once again, as they killed all 8 penalties during the game. Mark Visentin made 23 saves in the loss, dropping to 9-10-2 on the year, while Miele takes over 9th in the AHL in scoring with 28 points.
The Pirates return home Tuesday for the 19th annual New Year's Eve Game and first time at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee as they face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Puck drops at 5:30 PM and fans who arrive early will get noisemakers and other party favors. Following, the largest indoor fireworks display will take place on the ice, presented by Pyrotecnico Special Effects and Lasers. Also, Pirates fans who bring a canned or non-perishable food item to the game will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming January Pirates game. Tickets are available by calling the Colisee Box Office on Friday at (207) 283-2009 ext. 525 and online at thecolisee.com.
